    Administrator wont allow any updates

    Hi. Thanks for having me.
I'm at my wits end. My Laptop is new and has Windows 10 already installed. It was recommended as A Games Laptop as I run Train Simulations. I've been getting Updates for my graphics card which worked fine at first. Now when I click the box that has, do you wish to install the update,a box appears with NO in capital letters. It's also has, I need to contact administrators to carry on. There is no shortcut or anything to get me to the admin page. When I first had the laptop and installed updates the box that appeared on screen had a yes or no option and not just NO as it does now. Yesterday I got so frustrated I saved all my photos and files to an external drive and went for A Factory Reset. After going on line to Find out how to do this in Win 10 I managed to get Factory Reset started. I was relived to see the message Factory Reset in progress. After about 30 sec it stopped wiv message, Windows Unable to Complete this action. I tried twice more and got the same result. So now I've got a laptop that won't install any updates, except for Windows Defender, and wont complete a factory reset. The only programmes I have added to the laptop since I bought it are, Windows Defender, Photoshop CC the full edition which is paid for monthly and Train Simulator 2017 which is made by Dovetail, I think, and run in The Steam Set up. I'm sorry this is long but I'm not a genius with computers and not sure if I've given enough info of my problem.
So basicly I can't install updates anymore, exept Windows Defender, or complete a factory reset. Thanks for reading this and any help would be very much appreciated.
    P. S I also installed The Yahoo E Mail app as I have a yahoo e mail account. Thanks. Eifion.

A factory reset should always work because it is independent of W10, its a dedicated recovery option provided by the PC manufacturer to take it all back to 'day one, out of box condition'.

Is that what you tried to do, rather than a Windows 10 'reset' or refresh ?

If so, then it sounds like there is some other issue at work... unusual on a new laptop. It also sounds a little unusual when you mention separate graphics card updates. As if there have been more than one, and also where have they come from ?

Windows Defender. You added that ? Where did that come from.

W10 already comes with Defender as standard. Nothing to install there. I'm wondering if you have actually installed something that has corrupted some system files somewhere.

    Thanks for reply Mooly.
I have used The Factory Reset that is available on The Windows Home Screen by
    Clicking Settings
    Update & Security
Recovery. A new box appears with Advance start up with a Restart Now option.
i then get A Blue Page with the heading Choose an option.
I proceed to The Troubleshoot Option which has, Reset your P.C or see advanced options.
The next page titled Troubleshoot comes with two boxes.
Reset this P.C let you choose to keep or remove files, then reinstalls windows.
    or Advanced Options.
I choose the first option, Reset this P .C
The Laptop shuts down and then gives a, getting things ready option.
The next page has two options.
Only the drive were windows is installed
    or
    All drives.
i chose the first option and a message appeared to say, There was a problem resetting your P.C No changes were made.
I have NVIDIA GEOFORCE Graphics and I get updates for it. After I download the updates I get the usual, do you wish to install latest update. In the past I used to get ayes or no option box. No I get a box with
Do you want to make changes to your device. All I get is a box with NO inside it. Something has already decided for me so I can't update my card driver.

i must apologise. Windows Defender was already preinstalled on this laptop. I was thinking of an older laptop that had Norton installed but had run out so installed Windows Defender.

My Laptop is Meddion Akoya with Win 10 64 Bit Installed.if that helps any.
My wife just asked if I had A Virus put it did it's usual scan and nothing came up.
Do you think I need to do A Full Scan. Sorry to be a pain..

I don't think a full scan will do much tbh.

The restore you are describing is that offered by Windows. I would have thought there would also be another restore option included by the manufacturer that is typically accessed by pressing one of 'F'' or function keys at boot up.

I would suggest you look on the Median site:
    https://www.medion.com/gb/service/download/manual.php

and look at the recovery options in the user manual. A factory restore reinstalls everything back to day one by using special files located on a hidden partition on the drive. Its a copy of the operating system and all included programs as supplied by the manufacturer.

I'd be surprised if it didn't have such a feature.

Your other alternative is to create a bootable USB drive of W10 and perform a clean install but see if you can locate a recovery option first.

    Hi Mooly.
sorry for late reply. I'm disabled and had a couple of not to good days. I will do as you suggest and let you know how I get on.
I managed to get to a point were a page appeared asking me to enter my admin password. I tried all the different passwords I've used in the past and none worked. It suggested I contact Microsoft to change the password. They said they would send a link to my registered e mail address, which they showed on screen. I clicked on this 3 times with no link coming into my inbox. I was then asked to try another way so I opted for my iPhone number. This worked first time and I inserted the code they sent. Success, but I have to wait 39 days for it to activate. I'm slowing going nuts. So once again thanks and I will do as you suggest. Regards. Eifion

No problem and sorry to hear of your problems.

What is the model number of your laptop ? Lets see what we can find out about what recovery options there are.

    Hi Mooly.
Its just this second finished doing all its security downloads etc and The Factory Reset is complete. I'm dreading doing an update for my graphic card. The icon has just started to flash to let me know I have an update. Think I will leave until tomorrow.
Now I've had an on screen message to let me know One Drive has updated.
I've got to download Photoshop CC and The Steam Train Simulator. Then I will have a go at updating the driver. In all my excitement I forgot to tell you that I followed your advice and clicked on The Meddion Site for The Instruction Manual. It's said for A Factory Reset I had to Press F11 as the machine was booting up. I then got an option screen asking if I wanted to keep my files or do a complete reset. I took the first option even though I had saved my stuff on an external drive. If it goes haywire I will start again only then I will go for the complete Factory Reset with no files saved.
Thanks ever so much for your help. I will let you know tomorrow evening how it goes.
    Good Night.
    Eifion.

It sounds like you getting somewhere although I'm still puzzled why you need to do a graphics card driver update on a new laptop. Lets see how it all goes this time around.

    Hi Mooly.
All is well now. I reinstalled Steam and the laptop is now installing my game. This time when I clicked on the game app I was given the option of Yes or No which is what it showed before my problems with administrator started.
The Laptop was advertised as A Gaming Laptop with A Hi Spec Graphics Card. I purchased it from Argos 9 months ago and since then I keep getting Update Notifications from NVIDIA. I just click on them and let it run. I did it earlier and this time the box came up offering me the Yes or No option, thank god. It was this update that came up as NO you need to be administrator that brought to my notice that something wasn't right. That's why I joined Tenforums as I'm useless at anything technical with computers.
Im glad I did join and I've added the app to my task bar so if any more problems should arise I can come to you and your colleagues for help.
So, again. Thanks ever so much for your help and advice. Really Appreciated as I was pulling out what hair I have left.

Pleased to hear you have it working OK now

Driver updates tend to split opinions with many adopting the 'if it 'aint broke don't try and fix it' philosophy. In other words, unless you have a specific issue that an updated driver may correct, then you are probably best not installing the latest offering just because it has become available.

Making a disk image of your system (a full image backup) can be useful because it allows you to always return back to that point in time. Windows 10 has that option already built in... nothing to install or add.

    Pleased we could help anyhow
