All I know, is that I am really sick and tired of having to babysit Windows Update. The whole idea of Windows 10 was automation and automation for the updates and they were suppose to install silently in the background. Every time I turn around, no matter what forum I look at, it is always the same old solutions that don't work; especially for Cumulative Updates.

Delete the software distribution folder, rename the software distribution folder, don't delete the software distribution folder, delete what is inside of it, stop the windows service, start the windows service, stop the bits service, start the bits service, use the administrative command prompt, run DISM, run a disk check, clean up disk space and finally, my favorite............wait for it----use the windows update troubleshooter. Note these are mentioned in no particular order; but my point is valid in saying I have been at this for years with other versions of windows and if you even think about making a phone call to support about these trickled updates, they immediately assume it's your internet connection, it's your router, or my favorite ---- it's the weather because you're on satellite internet. It could be the clearest day of the year with a visibility range of ten miles linear and they would still try to convince you that it is the weather; or ooops, I forgot they mentioned something about a sunspot or inter-galactic rays from a mysterious event that happened in May many years ago when several of the major planets were in a grand alignment and it was supposedly the end of the world.

How about this idea: I honestly feel everybody is in a download queue to ease up the load on their servers and you get the update when they say you get it. It seems recently I noticed the trend of how the updates are delivered. First I get the notice of the update (usually 2 days out from its official release) then my computer tries to download the update unsuccessfully at least for three more days and then finally by the fifth day, my computer might actually try to chew into the grunt of the update. Usually by the sixth day, my computer finally chokes down the update and I'm left wondering in all that time if my computer was vulnerable to attack because the updates are usually security related to identifying and patching vulnerabilities in the Microsoft products our computers use.

I could go on forever about my days in Windows 7 Era times; until they broke its updater and everyone had to babysit Windows 7 updates because you had to install them in a particular order after Microsoft broke Windows update.

Bottom line, I feel like I'm in a download queue and the updates are trickled like drippings to the poor. If you are an Enterprise user, the updates flow cleanly, or so I heard.

I am having the same issues, though I finally got the Security update to install on my laptop.

I tried everything on both my desktop and laptop. I followed these instructions on this page:

    Error 0x8007010b - Microsoft Community

    1. Use Troubleshooting to repair Windows update components.Right-click start, Control Panel, Troubleshooting
Under the heading - System and Security
Click - Fix problems with Windows Update
Follow the prompts then reboot and try update again.

    2. Manually repair Windows update components.
    Right-click start, command prompt (admin)
Copy and paste all these commands at once and press enter.
Then reboot and try update again

    net stop bits
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop appidsvc
    net stop cryptsvc
    ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
    ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
    net start bits
    net start wuauserv
    net start appidsvc
    net start cryptsvc

I tried downloading and installing the update manually. I shut down and restarted my PC. I hit Retry several times on the Update screen. I Troubleshooted and Troubleshooted. I did a chkdsk and fix to my C: drive.

I still cannot get it or the Adobe Security update to install on my desktop. I have over 55GB free space on my C: drive. Surely that's enough, isn't it?????

I left my computer on all night and used the option to let it update from any PC out there.

    Nada. Nothing.

I have the same problem. Tried every advise from this thread, as well as other forums, and no luck.

After reading about WannaCry virus, I decided to double check if my Windows is up to date. When I went to Windows Update center and found that it hasn’t installed any updates since early March. It tries doing it every day, and always fails. So my computer is still vulnerable. Since KB4019472 won’t install, I tried installing the previous cumulative update with the same negative result. I spent about 2 days trying all sort of things to fix this, but nothing helps.

When I try to install automatically, it goes to 9%, then freezes for half an hour, and then shows the failure message with error 0x80073712. If I do it manually, it also stops at about 15% for about 10 minutes, then goes to 100% really fast, then shows it was unable to install update. By the way, I have 131 GB free on the C: drive.

So, thanks to Microsoft, I am still vulnerable to this this virus and to any other vulnerability that wasn’t fixed until early March. I feel really aggravated right now, haven’t felt so irritated about Microsoft since the time I was using Windows 95.

Because of the Troubleshooting options I picked and recommended fixes I selected, it erased my install history so I can't check anymore re: if I got updates in March or April. But I'm in the same situation, as I describe in my post. I again tried the downloaded Windows Update troubleshooting tool, as well as the one accessed from the Control Panel and Systems to "Fix Problems with Windows Update," and it tried deleting and reinstalling the updates and I got "Failed" again. Grrr!!!

Yes @eweiss, it does that. So does restoring a system image. There is still a record of all your updates though.

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Update history. Now click 'Uninstall updates' and you will find them all listed there under 'Microsoft Windows'.

I just went there, and found that the last update that successfully installed, was KB3200970, released on 9 Nov 2016. My computer automatically installed it on 18.11.2016. None of the updates since then were able to install.

I tried downloading and installing the cumulative Dec-2016 update (KB3201845), and it didn't work either (tried it multiple times, with restarting Windows Update service, erasing update, cache, etc.). So basically none of the updates released after November 2016 were able to install on my computer, neither automatically, nor manually, and therefore, the problem could not be KB4019472 itself, but something else.

I currently keep troubleshooting this, will post if I find anything.

It looks like I may be unprotected. This is what the Uninstall updates showed re: what I have for Windows.

I read on couple other forums that if your Windows Update is refusing to install any updates, it might help to download Windows Media Creator and reinstall Windows with keeping your current settings. However, I was unable to do it, as this Windows installation fails for me after running for about 40 minutes (no error code or explanation, just a mocking "Unable to install Windows" message that popped up at some point).

So if I try that, the worst that can happen is my Windows will remain unchanged? Or will it leave me with a half-installed and unusable Windows OS? I went to the page and requested to be notified when Windows Creator is available, but I did not pick the option to install it now.

I guess it depends on how far it goes and at which point it fails. Mine fails before it made any changes to system, so the only thing it leaves behind is the installation files it downloads (hidden files on C: drive with names like $WINDOWS.~BT).
