Windows 10 update to version 1607

I did not know the "Anniversary Update" would install, like, Windows 11. (may well have been)
I first had issues with the update error 'Can't yada, yada due to USB device.
I found a reg fix for that. Loaded the update and it took like forever.
OK, finally finished and last reboot. Up pops Windows 10 version 1607 which just almost destroyed many
of my settings and enhancements I had made to my preferences. Well this sucks.
I played with it for a while and then, totally disgusted, restored an image prior this update.
I installed show/hide updates. I also reinitialized the reg change I made making sure MS won't just sneak it in.
Good luck with that. I'm just venting. I'll be normal again tomorrow.

Yep the way W10 updates is pretty frustrating, the best you can do is Defer feature updates, and it will take longer to update.

But the Anniversary is pretty good compared to the Creators update, IMO.

I would not go making a bunch of changes and customizations to W10, because you know it`s gonna update to a new version sooner or later.

I record every one of my Windows customizations in a Word document, including step by step process to create them.

Then whenever clean installing, setting up new PC's, or dealing with major OS upgrades (now referred to as Feature Updates) I can just go down the checklist and get everything back to where it was in about an hour or so.

The kicker is that, at least with the 1607 upgrade, even the settings changed, so my cheat sheet was not exactly step by step anymore.
But at least you get to see just how many defaults were reset.
My favorite was that Disk Defragmenter was back on Automatic and my SSD was on for defragmentation. Nice!

Great comments. I was pretty stressed yesterday trying to address too many projects I had going.
When I finally pulled the trigger on the W7 to W10 free I felt this was going to last a good while.
A lot of time and effort goes into making my lappy happy so it makes me happy. And then BAM!!
I'm a retired computer and network engineer that has not totally kept up with new innovations over
the last few years. I play on my system a lot. Not games but finding something interesting on the net
and download and install only to have it play havoc with my system. I always keep full ISO backups
so if the problem is deeply entwined in the OS, I just restore and go to the next fun thing.
I'll eventually get my mind into this 1607 install just like I did as mentioned above. But for now
I'll just rest on my laurels. Now I have to get off those laurels and walk/jog my 6 miles I do every day so.......
    LATER.
