On Windows Defender Definition Update error 0x80070643

    Update 4/5/2017 4:00AM pst:

Please update to the latest threat definition version (1.239.837.0 or higher) via Windows Update or the Windows Defender Client UI. If you are still experiencing the same 0x80070643 behavior, we recommend doing one final manual update with the latest packages from the adl portal: https://www.microsoft.com/security/p...tions/adl.aspx. From the portal please download and install both ‘Antimalware and antispyware updates’ and ‘Network Inspection System updates’ that works for your system.

    Hello all,

I just wanted to start a thread to have a chance to address everyone and inform you that the Windows Defender team is aware of the situation and working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue. We thank you for your patience and we should have a fix rolled out soon.

Meanwhile, for those running into the definition update error 0x80070643 (or protection definition error: -2147023293) we recommend you to manually get your machines back to a protected state by following the instructions outlined here: https://www.microsoft.com/security/p...tions/adl.aspx.

Please note the manual adl package is designed to update silently. To verify the manual update worked correctly please check with the Windows Defender (or SCEP) Client UI to see if it reports the latest threat definition version. The latest definition version can also be found in the link above (currently 1.239.797.0).

    Thank You,
    Jason Yim

Yes, today ,this morning, all went finally fine ( almost" out of the blue" !)
We can normally update our Defender without these ,very annoying errors, very glad and it costed us lots of time and headaches trying to solve it.
We all do hope it will stay this way !!

Finally had a chance to test latest updates(s) and all appears to be working. Marking this thread as solved. Thanks to Jason Yim and the WD Team.

hi there, I logged in tenforums just to ask about that issue and I immediately found this sticky thread: you are indeed one step above guys!

BUT.. my sit is a little different, I guess. Yesterday I found 3 updates available and I installed all: the Defender one fails, as you can see in the screenshot

On Windows Defender Definition Update error 0x80070643-windows-update-01.jpg

I reboot to let Windows apply the other two updates and then tried again: well, the update was not available this time, and it never was again (tried to search for updates many times). Can't understand why..

My Windows Defender definition is now 1.239.1340.0, if helps..

Should I manually download the updates? And last but not least, it's not clear to me from the OP post if MS developers told that situation is now OK and updates should work or if the solution is to manually update..

thanks a lot guys, see you!
