Windows 10 Update March 31 2017
-
Just another piece of the puzzle. Keep in mind, mine is on 15063.14.
Same ole ugly errors everywhere for Defender updates. Cannot use the direct link, DL'd file seems to do nothing when executed. Take this with a grain of salt, and I'm not suggesting this is a concrete solution, or 3rd party apps should be used, it just happened to work here. Using CCleaner, I checked off an option I never use, Windows Defender under Utilities. It cleans out Defender log files. After running CCleaner with this checked, WU processed normally, with no errors. No guarantee it won't get sick again, just that it worked this time. I've unchecked that entry for now to see what will happen going forward. Keep in mind, this is 15063.14, not 14393.969/970.
EDIT: 7:55am - just checked on my lappy running 14393.969, and it seems ok now! Has def 1.239.774.0, but shows as failed in Reliability History. Weird.......

Thanks for the tip f14tomcat...
I just used CCleaner to clear out the Windows Defender logs. Will post back to see if the next definition update installs without an error.

This is not really a fix, it's a workaround. You are just manually downloading the definitions and installing them. That's my guess unless you are saying that everything is now working properly after you ran what you posted.
I fixed
"my" issue by executing the following command in
cmd as
admin:
"%programfiles%\windows defender\mpcmdrun.exe" -signatureupdate -http

Did not work for me. This is a Microsoft problem I think and I am going to use Avast temporarily until they get it fixed. Another MS fiasco!

The CCleaner tip did not work. Just got this:
There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:
Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.239.778.0) - Error 0x80070643
-
What I've done is create scheduled event that runs at user logon (delayed start for 15 minutes) spawning a batch file that contains "%programfiles%\windows defender\mpcmdrun.exe" -signatureupdate -http
Problem solved until MS fixes what they broke. I can run the bat file any time I want if I wish to update the definitions without waiting for the next time I start Windoze <tm>

No Joy for me - It said No updates needed ?

Hey, folks - it's a Microsoft problem. Not worth our time and effort to try to fix their problem. We just have to work around them by using 3rd party anti-virus or waiting until they decide to fix it, hoping we don't get infected in the meantime.

Windows Update/Windows Defender
Still have the problem here on the East Coast.
Funny thing is, Windows Defender is reporting a connection failure and yet I'm able to post this.
This reminds me of when they broke Windows 7 Update.

Even though mpcmdrun.exe is telling you that no update is needed, it probably did download the signatures and installed them. Check the update tab inside of Windows Defender and you should notice they are now current and any error returned in Windows Update will now disappear if you recheck for updates.
