I tried to find this update with a "cab" extension, but couldn't find any....MS only seems to have released this update with the "msu" extension.

    Hi Oldmike65,

When I was not bugging you this evening I found this link (Cumulative Update KB4013429 and KB4013418 (Windows 10 Build 14393.953) - Software Updates - nsane.forums) which gives a link for a KB4013429 .cab update from Microsoft Update.

Scroll down until you get to 'Direct Download' and the different options listed in the Microsoft Catalog for msu are listed here for .cab.

My question: is it possible that the .cab update could be successful for me when the 'msu' wasn't?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks and regards,

Good Job, finding your cab files!!!! Try using the 64bit cab file for your Windows, it might work better for you, nothing to lose if it don't. Let us know how it works out dear.

You could try opening a Command prompt Admin and then type this.
    sfc /scannow

Then see if it finds any errors on your Windows and repairs them.

    Hi OldMike65,

I appreciate you still hanging in here on this problem.

As I have already mentioned earlier I ran into a similar Cumulative Update problem in the Fall of last year and eventually ended up reinstalling Windows. However, I am trying to use that option as a 'last' resort. Unfortunately, all that information, including how to install a .cab file, is gone.

That being said I plan on reading up on how I exactly install an Update by utilizing a .cab file. When I find something that explains the procedure in easy English I will give it a shot.

I did manage to download and install "wushowhide" . So at least now Windows doesn't try ramming this failing update down by throat every time it checks for updates. So, thanks for that tip.

It will probably be a few days before I tackle the .cab file install because my better half is getting tired of me hogging the computer ....lol

    Thanks and regards,

How to install a CAB file in Windows 10

In order to use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) Command line to install CAB files, open an Admin Command Prompt, and run the following command.
Note: Replace “Windows10.0-kb3172453-x64.msu” with your file name.

Move your update file to C:\updates.
Open command prompt, right-click Start and select Command Prompt(Admin)
    Type the following command:

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:C:\update\Windows10.0-kb3172453-x64.cab

Really, it is hardly worth bothering with now as CU will be out soon.

Rather than reinstalling Windows from scratch, you could try an in-place repair upgrade. This method keeps all your installed apps and files.

    Hi Bree, OldMike65 and all,

    Bree:

thanks for the link and I will keep it in mind

    OldMike65:

(1)First of all in your directions to install a .cab file I don't find and folder on my 'C' drive called 'Updates'. I even looked when I had 'show hidden folders' but still couldn't find it.

    (2) Since my last post I ran 'sfc /scannow' and the end result was "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them".

    (3) I then ran 'DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth' and it showed error 0x800fo821f after reaching 100 % and it said "The source files could not be found."

    Thanks and regards,
