Just reinstall windows 10 on new hdd and skip key entry - it will activate automatically as MS have a record of your hardware id from when you upgraded.

Boot from a Windows 10 installation USB flash drive or DVD. When it asks for a product key during the setup, click the link that says "I don't have a product key". First time the computer connects to the internet, it will activate Windows 10 automatically if you installed the same version of Windows 10 you had on the computer before.

Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

    Clean Install Windows 10

Yes - that is how Windows 10 works.

The free upgrade to Windows 10 gets you a Digital License. That Digital License is stored on the Windows 10 Activation server along with the hardware hash of the PC it was issued to. Basically a digital fingerprint of your PC. 7 Home got you 10 Home, so if you install 10 Home, and just click "I don't have a key" on the screen that asks for a key, the install will continue and activate with the Digital License stored on the activation server. The key you were issued was a generic key that everybody with 10 Home gets with the free upgrade. You could type it in, but its easier to just skip entering a key.

You could also try entering your original Windows 7 licence key. Microsoft still accepts Windows 7 and 8.1 keys to activate Windows 10 as long as you are trying to activate the correct version (the same one you had after your upgrade). I used my laptop's Windows 8.1 Pro key to activate a clean install of Windows 10 Pro right after I got it a little over a month ago. Also, last year when my motherboard died in my desktop and I was having activation issues, the MS support rep told me on the phone to use my original Windows 7 Professional key from before my upgrade to reactivate Windows 10.

That will work, but its not required in this situation.
