... can i set it to either set it to notify me for updates and then I download them, or set it to download them but not install them?
Mathew has already given links to the relevant Tutorials. In the first Tutorial the first two option are only available for Pro, if you have Home you can use Option Four (metered connections) to notify you that updates are waiting to be downloaded. Mathew's second Tutorial link explains how to hide specific updates so they won't be downloaded.

I have used both successfully on several machines.

As a Home Edition user, I confirm that no notification will be given. However, I use VBScript to make it notify me.

Sorry Matthew completely overlooked your links.

I'm on Pro so will take a look when back on PC.

    Will come back with outcome.

I'm sorry that was a typo that's supposed to say "I" overlooked.

Followed the steps in the tutorial & works great.

Just a question where does it notify me that an update is available apart from in Windows Updates itself.

I thought maybe I would get on notification in the task bar.

I use VBScript to make it notify me with a pop-up message.

Maybe it's changed now, but I'm sure that with a metered connection I used to get a notification in the Action Center that "there was a problem downloading updates". But I haven't left it to do its own thing since the original 10240 RTM. These days I check for updates myself before it has a chance to check automatically.
