How can i prevent Windows update downloading the wrong AMD drivers.

This little problem is starting to get on my nerves.

I have installed the latest AMD GPU drivers for my R9 290, and every day seemingly at random points Windows 10 decides to download and install a really old driver (9.14!).

I've tried uninstalling said driver using DDU which turns the update feature off in Windows 10.....but it seems to just have a mind of it's own.

I agree. The new update protocol takes away our freedom to do what we want. My problem is the opposite of yours. I want to keep an older graphics driver. Despite having configured Win 10 to never install new drivers (via System > advanced system setting > hardware TAB > device installation settings > No, let me choose and never...), it continually installs the newest drivers every time I update. If Microsoft had its way, we'd all have the same hardware and software. Wouldn't that be easy for them?

Apple is proof that that would be a good thing. I like customization as much as anyone but sometimes I wonder if we have to many options, then we have the nerve to blame Microsoft when something doesn't work right. It's a bit ridiculous to expect them to fully support everything under the sun.

Also, for what it's worth. If it doesn't work how you want it to, go to Linux. That is the problem with closed source. You are at their mercy of what they think is best, whether or not its actually any good.

There might be a way to disable Windows Update within Windows 10. After setting my Windows 7 to notify me if download/installs are available, somebody gave me a couple of VBS scripts that, upon running right after boot/startup, takes away, disables, etc. Windows Update for that session. I'm not sure if that VBS script will work for Windows 10 -- do you want to try the pair? [One script turns WU off, the other script turns it back on.] -- again, only for that particular active session.

Sure at this point i'll give anything a try if it means i don't have to keep doing the cycle of uninstalling and reinstalling.
I seriously hope this issue is fixed prior to release.

Here are the three batchfiles for Windows Update ON, OFF & processing

NOTE: I did not create these batchfiles; I do not remember the author's name, the creator's name or forum.

Here are the three batchfiles for Windows Update ON, OFF & processing.

    WU off
    rem BATchfiling Windows Update
    net stop wuauserv
    sc config wuauserv start=disabled
    exit

    WU on
    rem BATchfiling Windows Update
    sc config wuauserv start=auto
    net start wuauserv

    sc config wuauserv start=auto
    net start wuauserv
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuapp.exe startmenu

Skip to step 7 if you already have Windows Updates listed. (Windows might remove it because they want people to auto update)

You might wanna try this :
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. Type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
    3. Expand Computer Configuration.
    4. Right-click Administrative Templates, and then click Add/Remove Templates.
    5. Click Add, click Wuau.admin the Windows\Inf folder, and then click Open.
    6. Click Close.
    7. Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then expand Windows Update. The Configure Automatic Updatespolicy appears. This policy specifies whether the computer receives security updates and other important downloads through the Windows Automatic Updates feature. The settings for this policy let you specify if automatic updates are enabled on the computer. If the service is enabled, you must select one of the three configuration options.
    8. To view the policy settings, double-click the Configure Automatic Updatespolicy.

    9. To turn on Automatic Updates, click Enabled or to turn off select Disabled

System Screen > Advanced system settings > Hardware Tab > Device Installation Settings > select "No, let me choose what to do", then set it to, "Never install driver software from Windows update".

Thanks, alphanumeric, but even though I have done that, Win 10 installs the latest Intel HD Graphics driver every time the system does any update. Imagine that, an OS option that actually does nothing.
