    Windows license expires soon

    Activation troubleshooting

In order to best provide assistance, we request users to run either of the below to try and identify the issue you may be having.

    A. Activation Diagnostic Tool (Checks MS Office activation with basic Windows activation data only)

    B. LicensingDiag.ps1 (No MS Office data but extended Windows activation data collection (i.e Digital Licencing)
I have obtained and run these apps and also many others during my search for a solution to my "License expiring soon" problem, producing many reports and images which I hope will enable members of this forum to assist me.

Before going forward with my query, should I begin or join another discussion?
With reference to tool B. "LicensingDiag.ps1", it is evident that a particular instruction is needed to return the useful format which appears on the first post in this series. Not too tech savvy, I've been unable to reproduce the command which will provide that format. A bit more detail about what I need to do would be helpful.

My Cmd Prmt page looked like the following (yellow underline seemed to give data, not format required):

    @VintaGastru

You need to run B. in Powershell.

Save the .ps1 file to any folder - right-click and select "Run with Powershell"

Alternatively, hold Shift and right-click in the empty space of that folder and select "Open Powershell window here" you can then type in the command: .\LicensingDiag.ps1 -Show

May I wish you a very happy and successful 2019.
This is a trying time for me. In addition to the expiring license issue, now I have recurring bsod events AND today, following an automatic Windows 10 update, there is an error report for incompatible graphics driver, which was not a problem before.
I shall live with the latter for now and try to resolve the license issue first.
Up to date info to follow in a more detailed reply later.
    Kind Regards,

    WRT tenforums guidelines:
    1. The laptop was purchased through vendor, Windows 8 (and Microsoft Office 2013) preloaded - no key; I assume a user license (permission or whatever current term is).
OS was later upgraded to Windows 10 Pro during the period of free upgrade offer made by Windows/Microsoft.
    2. I have not used or removed any pirated software.
    3. Product keys and personal names in reports have been masked.
    4. A few weeks before end of 2018, "Your Windows licence will expire soon" notice (and 'You need to activate Windows in Settings') began to appear. You can see in accompanying screenshot that the option to activate is not available, nor was the activation troubleshooter.
Only option seemed to be to change the product key. I tried a generic key and retrieved keys but all failed (I know very little about all of the above, just following guidance on various forums).
You will see in information provided that there was an installation of Windows 10 Pro in about May 2018. It was NOT the initial installation. I was experiencing difficulty with MS Outlook when it was determined that only a fresh installation of the OS and of MS software would resolve it. That was done by a reliable and above board support technician.
I have wondered why, after some years of use of the Pro software, the activation problem has occurred. Could it have been as a consequence of this last-mentioned installation?
    5. I have attached txt reports as suggested in your guidelines.

    The software licencing report shows:
    Attachment 219574

    The Activation report is:
    Attachment 219575

I also have the ShowKey report for the originally loaded Win Ver 8
    Attachment 219573

The i.d. sticker/tab on the underside of my laptop clearly complies with the 'windows' emblem for the (pre-loaded) Windows 8 Home ver, changing from copper/bronze to green when the viewing angle changes. I'm fairly sure that the problem I have is that, after an upgrade to Win 8.1, I made the wrong decision to install Win 10 Pro when it was offered as a free upgrade. Not sure why the upgrade didn't kick out my request for the Pro version, however.

You can see in the windows Settings/Activation dialogue window (following) the ref to Professional version. But I'm puzzled by the reference to the 'Organisation's activation service' for the activation because this machine & software have always been in private, no profit or business use.

It seems my time is running out (ref to days before expiry) and I'm not sure what I may need to do if that should occur. I hope you are able to assist.

    Kind regards.

    @VintaGastru,

The solution is simple. You need to install Windows 10 Home, or purchase a real product key for Windows 10 Pro.

    @VintaGastru,

Good details, thanx for following the instructions in the OP.

Unfortunately, I can't access the attachments.

As stated by Navy the easiest recourse is to re-install Home - it will then activate with the Win 8 key in the firmware.

I am surpised you were running Pro without issue for that long.. i.e. without having to install a Pro key. Seems odd.

In the past the upgrade used an incorrect default Volume licence key* (it was later corrected to the default Retail Pro key VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T ) which could account for the problems you are having as it now expects to activate with a KMS server (Windows calls this 'Organisation's activation service'). This needs to occur at least 180 days apart for continued activation .. thus my surprise that you were running Pro 'some years' prior to this happening.

Also please make sure you do regular backups (particularly prior to upgrades and updates)

*Note: using VL installation media also installs the incorrect default key as noted here

PS: are you sure about the "above board" nature of the support technician?
If they (knowingly or unknowingly) installed an exploit that would explain the VL activation running as long as it did.

It is gratifying to have the kind of support through this forum. Besides good advice based, I'm sure, on experienced knowledge of the system, the turn around time is impressive.

I believe that my tech support is genuine and appropriate. He had nothing to do with my original laptop purchase pre-loaded with Win 8 and MS Office, nor with my upgrades to 8.1 and subsequently Win 10 Pro. He became involved only when I began having a problem with Outlook some time early in 2018. Never did resolve what may have been wrong but installed an earlier version of the MS Office software.

I ended up taking the laptop to the same guy today to sort out my expiry problem. I'm unfamiliar with the different tests/assessments which he did but at one point he did point to information on the screen and commented that it indicated that the version was legit and had been activated. Then he spoke about contacting Microsoft to resolve something and as far as I could see, later entered a product key which he said would enable my installation to be recognised as appropriate.

As regards to feedback which may help others, I regret that I am unable to provide any helpful feedback re: advice from the forum. I can say that none of the other help sites I visited gave quite the same impression of attentiveness or responsiveness as this forum does.

    Thank you.

Thanx for the feedback @VintaGastru ...

I'm not sure why they had to go to MS and enter an 'appropiate' key when 'the version was legit' - anyhow, all's well that ends well.

Humour me and send me a diagnostic report when you can - I am interested in checking what the support guy did.

Script to check error codes - see first post

To check activation errors use this script to see the description

It uses the built-in slmgr.ini file found in 'C:\Windows\System32\slmgr\0409'

Not all error codes are covered.
