Win 10 Ann Ed - "Shutdown without updating"

Hi ALL,

My main desktop PC updated to Win 10 Ann Ed without any problem as did my sister's desktop. I was over to my sister's house the other day and doing something on her PC when I went to shut it down I was offered 4 choices:

Restart with updates
Restart without updates
Shutdown with updates
Shutdown without updates

I never saw the option to Restart or Shutdown without doing the updates and would like that option. I went into the Update settings on my PC hoping to find some setting to allow those options but I didn't find anything.

Does anyone know how to turn on that option?

I'd like to see those options too! I have W10 Home + Pro systems - they don't have it. I suspect your sister has another edition; maybe education or enterprise?

Nope! As far as I know she has Win 10 Home same as me. The next time I go there I'll double check and get the exact version and release she has and compare it to mine, but again I'm 99 44/100 % sure its the same as mine!

You get those options when windows update has downloaded an update but you've not elected to install it. In this case it will be the cumulative updates on top of 1607 most likely.

If you haven't got the message about the update being downloaded (where it says we will do this at 03:00 am) or you didn't say "Restart now") then when you shutdown (or restart) it will give you option of doing so with or without the upgrade automatically. Certainly I get it automatically and I always shut down with

+ X then U. Perhaps if you shutdown some other way you don't get the option.

All versions of 10 do this (at least Pro and Server TP5 do) and there has been something similar since 7 at least by pressing Alt+F4 to shutdown...Shut Down Windows Without Installing Updates | PCWorld

There's nothing different in Windows 10 on your sister's machine and yours, all behave the same way. There's nothing you can do / change to show or not show restart / shutdown options, whether to restart or shutdown with or without update.

Those shutdown / restart options are available in all editions of Windows 10, and have been there over a year now, since a few builds before November Update version 1511. It's the nature of update that determines if option to shutdown / restart without updating is shown or not. Some updates require immediate restart, some not.

The option to choose restart or shutdown with or without update is offered when the update is not critical, not necessary to do immediately. For instance, when a Windows 10 Insider Preview (be it Home, Pro, Education or Enterprise edition) has downloaded a build upgrade and you are shown Restart now prompt in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, you don't have to do the upgrade immediately. Instead, you can find shutdown / restart options in Start. The shutdown options shown in Start let you in this case choose Update and Restart, Update and Shutdown (in which case upgrade continues next time PC is powered on), or postpone the upgrade simply by selecting Restart or Shutdown. These options will then be available about a week, the same maximum time period Restart options in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Restart options allows you to postpone the automatic restart with upgrade.

Never have seen those options in my machines, ever.

The fact that you have not noticed them does not automatically mean they do not exist. I've had them for instance with every build upgrade, that's how I always postpone the upgrade to a more convenient time.

I'll get a screenshot when the next Insider build comes, probably later this week. I can promise to get the screenshot because I know those options will be there when it's time to upgrade.

I'm going to pay extra special attention to all my systems, and see if I get it. :) All my systems are out of the Insider now.

What about Alt-F4. I don't have any pending updates so when I use it and there are no other windows open a dialog box comes up with a few selections including Shutdown and Restart. Is it possible when an update is pending that there will also be options to do either but without updating?

Also what about Ctl-Alt-Del. When you use that you get a blue screen with some options such as starting the Task Manager. But in the lower right there are 3 icons including a power button icon. Again with no updates pending the only options are Restart or Shutdown. But if I remember correctly if there are updates pending then it also has those options but without updating.

All shut down / restart options are always shown in all four Shut down menus and drop down lists (Start > Shut down options, right click Start > Shut down or Sign out, ALT + F4, Sign in screen). It is irrelevant which method you use to show the options and select your Shut down / Restart option, they are always the same in all four methods.
