Kind of best to wait til the updates are available as direct downloads and install that way while blocking the update service till safe to turn on again when MS sorts it out with another update and so the dice keeps rolling

Actually, installing the update manually, which has been suggested several times, is the simplest way to avoid any issues. No contortions needed. What you did was not so simple imho.
KB3189866 stuck at 45% or 95%? Install it manually instead - gHacks Tech News
Really? Disc Cleanup is basic... very simple, a couple of clicks. Clearing the browser cache same.... But trying to find the Windows Catalog for the first time was time consuming not to mention knowing what update failed. When my system hung, it didn't report which ONE of the 500 updates (I exaggerate a little) was the culprit. Then to have it error out when running frustrating and confusing. Finally finding a link to it took more time. When I saw someone suggest just clearing corrupted data sitting around as a solution, I thought that was very smart. I tried it. It worked for me. Simple. A couple of clicks and I was back in gravy. Once the corrupted files were cleared, then Windows Update worked as designed, which was my point.
Really? Reread what you wrote and read this: Install update manually.
I'm also stuck at 95%. Event viewer shows lots of service errors as well.
Do we really have to manually update or will this be fixed eventually?
Cliff S has a suggestion that may help.
Cumulative Update KB3189866 Windows 10 build 14393.187
I have installed a fresh copy of win 10, which ISO downloaded a few days back.
Immediately after installation windows started downloading updates. Now, I want to ask why my laptop got the latest update KB3189866 but also updated and installed KB3176936 ?
Isn't the new update would have been suffice as it contains all previous updates built-in?
Now, I want to upgrade 2 of my other PC and thinking of manually downloading the update file, so shall I just grab the latest KB3189866 OR also the old KB3176936 is required ?
