KB4056892 not offered for update; manual install fails 0x80073715

The Meltdown patch has not been offered so far for update on my Win10 Pro (build 1709) laptop. It also fails the PowerShell script that MS provided to check if your system is vulnerable. It is NOT an AMD system, and I'm using Windows Defender for antivirus protection. When Windows Update failed to pull the Meltdown updated, I manually downloaded the KB4056892 cumulative update. When I try running it fails with error 0x80073715. I've tried running sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth both of which report that Windows is just peachy.

The only other thing to note is that non-security updates were deferred, but I recently turned that off and updated to build 1709.

Any other suggestions before I chuck this thing in a volcano?

Sometimes you need to run the sfc command up to three times with a reboot after each. Did you do that?

Ran sfc /scannow three times, with reboots in between. No change. Should I have sacrificed a goat, too?

Also ran Windows Update Troubleshooter twice. Both times it said it found problems and fixed them. Update still fails.

As a workaround, try the Windows Update MiniTool (WUMT). I've had it work for me even when Windows Update was hopelessly bollixed on some of my PCs (which, as we all know, happens from time to time here in Windowsland). Give it a try: it's free, and worst case, your circumstances will simply be unchanged.

So this laptop is a bit weird. I can dual boot Win10 Pro and Win10 Home. I booted into Home for the first time in a couple of months, and while it still could not find the update, I was able to download and install it manually. Since the Pro install seems to be corrupted, and I don't need to join a domain or anything, I'm just going to nuke it. At least I'm (partially) protected against Meltdown and Spectre now...
