    updates out of control

I am receiving huge updates that are costing me both financially and in data usage. I have a relatively low data limit on my PC (10Gb's pm) and the updates are consuming the lot just lately. Today 2 updates were installed. One was described as a cumulative update and the other just an update. However they both consumed approx. 3.1 Gb's each, I can give you the amount in kilobytes but they're almost exactly the same and it looks awfully like a duplication.
This is not the first time it's happened and also the duplication. It is extremely annoying and, as I said, costly. I think it's disgusting. I was almost coerced into changing to Win 10 in the first place and now they are almost equivalent to stealing my download. If I could lodge an official complaint I would.

The really big update you just got was the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. You can turn off Windows Update by going to Control Panel - System and Security - Administrative Tools - Services. Double click on Windows Update and Disable it. You'll have to find some other way to keep your system up to date, as Windows 10 is an evolving program, and the updates WILL keep being released, although you won't be receiving them. Just be aware if you do turn Update back on you are going to get them all.

Hi. Have you set your system for metered connection?
Ethernet Connection - Set as Metered or Unmetered in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

    That should help.

Yes but it sounds like they are a necessary evil and download them or not they will still accumulate. In the past, previous versions, updates were only installed automatically if they were important to the running of the computer (I assume). I'm sure I'm getting a lot of stuff I don't require which is so wrong. I don't have anything against updates. I would just like a bit more choice.

Any OS without updates is dead OS. You may not need them but OS does and that keeps you safer and up to date.

I believe this is the main problem the thread starter is posting about. It appears that this data plan is way too small for Windows 10 operations. It appears that there are two possible solutions: Budget for and get a bigger data plan, or, rollback to the previous Windows version. Getting a larger data plan would probably be best.

I agree with you but I also think that Microsoft have to take some responsibility. When I purchased my current laptop it came with W8. Not long after that I was bombarded with recommendations to move on to W10. It was free so I accepted the invitation. It all started then with the first huge downloads with no prior notice. Things have been ok until the last month or so and now a new wave has started, again with no prior notice. Yes maybe I do need a new plan but I manage because I have to and maybe you don't understand that.

"...Yes maybe I do need a new plan but I manage because I have to and maybe you don't understand that..."
I understand perfectly! I'm entering a few lean years, so I have cut out paying for several very good programs and going with their respective free versions. Now, remember you accepted Microsoft's invitation. Microsoft is not going to change its operations to suit me, to suit you, to suit anybody using Windows, unless many many folks email in, write in with their comments, complaints, suggestions -- which sometime have caused changes to be made.
Let me rephrase my earlier comment:
You have a fork in the road; you will take one of the following tines:
-- either rollback, full image back, to Windows [8 did you say?], or
-- keep Windows 10 and suffer more of Microsoft's Windows Updates operations, or
-- do I have done -- cut off paying for some things -- and get a bigger data plan
Again, because of lean years are a'comin' for me, I have made deep cuts in pay-for programs; I can relate!

I don't think that one has to go to the expense of extra data for Windows... It is a huge data hog re updates, telemetry and such, (just comapare using Linux or network activity with WireShark)) hence I use TinyWall to control data exchange - set WU off and download CU when needed.
