No longer able to choose options in Windows 10 updates - what happened

As a matter of background info, I have always kept up with the latest windows update. At one time - up until a few weeks ago - I had options within Windows Updates (in Windows 10), which gave me choices on how I wanted to download the updates. I have Windows 10 Home. Many of my options choices are now grayed out and previously, there were several choices on how I could download windows updates - but no more.

I now have no options at all when it comes to doing Windows Updates (please read on).

Here are several screen shots of my Windows Update page (found within settings).

No longer able to choose options in Windows 10 updates - what happened-windows-update-page-1.jpg
The first image screen shot shows what my main Windows 10 Update page looks like. In the past I had options where the "Check for Updates" button was. Now that is all gone. All I can do is check for updates and that is all. They then download and install. Even when I uninstall a particular update, when it comes time to do an update again, the previous uninstalled downloads are installed again.

No longer able to choose options in Windows 10 updates - what happened-windows-update-restart-options-page.jpg
The 2nd image shows the "Restart Options," and again...areas are grayed out and I cannot select whether to turn on or off. How can I get rid of the grayed out areas?

No longer able to choose options in Windows 10 updates - what happened-windows-update-advanced-options-page.jpg
The 3rd image shows "Advanced Options," and although there is nothing strange there, when I click on the "Choose how updates are delivered" link, I get the following page - again, with areas grayed out - along with a notation that says, "Some Settings are Managed by your Organization." What organization is managing my settings? This is a home PC and I'm the Administrator. I'm perplexed.

So in effect, I now longer have any say so how updates are downloaded and delivered. What caused all of this - a cumulative Windows 10 update?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks....

'Some settings are... ' means some settings changes have been made.
Nominally this is intended to refer to changes being made via the group policy editor (used by your 'organisation').
However, it also very confusingly can seem to appear when you don't expect it, and so reads meaninglessly. (Well, is MS famous for specific and explicitly helpful error messages?).

You may find that you have made changes in the Privacy settings, or used a tool to control telemetry ('MS spying on you').. or sthg else.

First, if you don't have it, download and install Spybot Antibeacon (free). This is one of the tools to block so-called 'spying'. You may see some coloured bars indicating settings that have been applied.

    Click the Undo button.

See what effect that has, and post back with the result.

Thanks - I downloaded Spotbot Antibeacon, installed and immunized. Then I hit undo and checked my Windows Update settings - all were still the same, so I don't know what to say.

Hi, that's ok, that just addresses a number of possibilities.. I didn't promise it would fix it.

First see these on Windows Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...87107a4?auth=1

How to Change Windows Update Settings When Managed or Disabled by System Administrator? - AskVG

Here are more possibilities - notes from other threads when this was a more common problem:
Case 2. Using the Diagnostic and usage data setting
Go to Settings and navigate the dialogues as follows:
"Settings" -> "Privacy" -> "Feedback & diagnostics" -> "Diagnostics and usage data".

If this is set to "Basic", change it to "Enhanced" or higher.

Hopefully the message "Some settings are managed by your organization" disappears.

Note: Sometimes this option is greyed out.

    OR

Case 3. Telemetry, using the Group Policy Editor
Note: the Group Policy Editor is not available in Windows 10 Home.

    https://www.itechtics.com/enable-gpe...ndows-10-home/
    - claims to enable the Group Policy Editor in Win 10 Home.

Make sure you have administrator rights and follow the steps below:

Step 1: Launch a Run dialogue by pressing the Windows key and R simultaneously.
Type in gpedit.msc and click OK or Enter.
Step 2: In the Group Policy Editor go to
Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Data Collection and Preview Builds.
Step 3: Find the Allow Telemetry item and double-click it to edit the policies.
Step 4: Change the setting to Enabled.
Change the drop-down menu entry to 3-Full and click Apply.
Step 5: Now open the item again and change its Setting to Not configured and hit the Save button.

The message should no longer stop you from accessing various system settings in Windows 10.

Case 4: Disable Telemetry, using the Registry Editor, + disable 2 services
    http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-disab...in-windows-10/

    This relates to
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection
    And disabling these services:
    Diagnostics Tracking Service
    dmwappushsvc
    Case 5: L server
I did absolutely nothing EXCEPT installed the latest service pack to SQL Server 2014 on Friday. When I came in on Monday and went to settings the dreaded message was gone

Case 6: ‘Some settings are managed...” appears on the Start Menu
    See

Now beyond that, feel free to search the forum (white box above) for
    Solved some settings are managed

Please post back with any outcome and what you've tried.

    One more thing

Thanks for all the tips. I'll check out those links, but I did want to say that the advice you gave here:

If this is set to "Basic", change it to "Enhanced" or higher.

I did this, however, the "basic" was greyed out and I couldn't adjust anything.

Ah ha.. that was a problem that came up a few times long ago. Usually it was a consequence of the user changing privacy settings.

Can you run Anti-beacon again, but this time just post a screenshot?
Also download O&O Shutup (free), run it and again post a screenshot or screenshots of the settings.

    Try
    Regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection
Export the key as a backup, then
Delete the binary key "AllowTelemetry" (Right Side)

Also see (but do exactly the opposite of as far as you can)

You can remove all policies, that should remove that message, but it will also reset some other settings.

Run CMD as admin and copy/paste:

    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost" /f
    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsStore\WindowsUpdate" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsStore\WindowsUpdate" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\Policies" /f

This option becomes available after installing updates, so you can choose, when to restart.

Unfortunately this service aka "Connected User Experiences and Telemetry" has been tight to the system, disabling it also disables Geolocation and apps like Weather and most importantly it prevents login to MS account.
