Yes COA sticker on dell pc. I've used win10 for about a year. What does the MB have to do with anything? Win10 activation was never tried, both win7 and win10 were re-installed a couple months ago.
I went to create an MS account to learn that the user name existed, so I had the password emailed to me.
What is my best direction from here?

The MB has everything to do with it. Windows licenses and product keys get tied to the motherboard when you use them. The Windows 10 digital license gets tied to the motherboard when a Windows 7 is upgraded. Move a Windows 7 product key from motherboard to motherboard and it can get locked out from automatic online activation.

    So....

    1. Replace the motherboard, install Windows 10 on it, there will be no digital license stored on Microsoft activation servers for the new motherboard, Windows 10 will not activate via digital license.

    2. Attempt to activate that Windows 10 with a Windows 7 product key that has become blocked from automatic online activation due to being used on a previous computer (motherboard) and Windows 10 will not activate.

    3. You can call Microsoft technical support and hope they can sort it out for you or

    4. You install Windows 7 on the new motherboard. To activate it with the blocked key you must call the Microsoft activation phone number and tell the computer voice that you are installing the blocked key on only one computer. Once Windows 7 is activated on that computer (motherboard), then if Microsoft is still offering the free upgrade you can either upgrade the Windows 7 to Windows 10, or you should be able to use the Windows 7 product key to activate a clean install of Windows 10. Either way should create a digital license for Windows 10 for that motherboard stored on Microsoft activation servers for future retrieval.

    Win10 Pro

    Hmm,
To many posts I think; the MB was replaced, SW was re-installed as posted. The initial MB replacement wasn't a fashionable thought, instead: a needed task to regain any use of a cosmetically better looking laptop and keep it's superior screen capabilities.
I run into several limitations with Win7 home premium and have considered get the pro version more than once. Looks like the right time to do same with win10 pro.
    thanks,
    Keith

I did option 2 and it worked.
