Many thanks. As I understand it, use of a MS ID makes a password to open pc compulsory, am I correct? Like when installing it insists on a password when installing with MS ID?

edit: I just saw a sign in with mS Account, so to see what happens I entered my email and password, it said to do password again, then I would be prompted to sign in when I use pc - no thanks, I do not want password opening, I want to open pc and go to desktop.
You set your PC to auto logon with a Microsoft ID, I do it on my desktop PC. Sign in User Account Automatically at Windows 10 Startup

For the casual PC user that's likely not an issue, how many would be using more than one version of Windows 10 on a device? I'm not dismissing what your saying, it is an issue.. For me, I have enough MSDN keys to reinstall whichever OS I want to run. Most of my entitlements were via the free upgrade. The only keys I've had to use are some Education and Enterprise. And Enterprise doesn't count in this scenario anyway. It wouldn't be that big a deal (license wise) if my PC died and I couldn't recover them all. What seems to be very simple can end up being very complicated if you test different version, and or dual boot.
Sure but this means that MS have basically not thought this through or if they have, they have not given clear guidelines so here is mine:

    1) always login with MSA.

    2) If you do change to a local account, be aware the link of digital licence and MSA is lost, and you would need to relogin with MSA to re-establish digital link.

    3) If dual booting with two digital licences (eg one for home and one for pro), make sure you use a different MSA on each version. Do not set up each version with both MSAs to avoid logging into wrong one (in case that changes digital licence linked to that MSA).

When you log in with a local account, activation says activated with a Digital License. If you log into the same machine with an MS Account it say activated with a Digital License tied to your MSA account.

There is a huge public misconception on many sites that the digital licence is linked with the account, so if you login with an MS account, it activates. This is not the case.

All the link does is "remember" where your digital licence is on the current activation servers (maybe makes a copy on your MS account?), so if it FAILS to activate due a hardware changes (new mobo id does not match record), you can activate it manually as the link tells pc where to find your digital licence.

Thus removing device from the MSA account does not remove the digital licence, only the pointer to it on the activation servers (or maybe just a copy).

I have tested this - I logged in with MS account in VM with a digital licence, deleted device from VM. the reinstalled clean using a local login account (so device does not reappear on MS account), and it still activates ok.

Switch back to a local account I guess. You didn't say anything about other users until now. Or set a PIN, a pin is only 4 digits to enter.

    With MS account:-

run netplwiz, uncheck box saying user needs password to login.

At next screen, enter password, and confirm, ok

    Reboot pc.

Only problem is if you remove need to enter password, you do not stop to select other users. Just better to have a pw for each account with multiple users.

I mentioned that in post #41, He doesn't want to use a password period. Just click the user to log in, and log in without entering a password.

If I did this, would my license still linked to my MS account? Will it boot straight to the Desktop? When I first upgraded to 1607 I linked my license to my MS account, then switched back to a local account without a password.

Has anyone else read for the past month or so all licenses show up as Retail, even if you upgraded from OEM?
