    Computer can't complete any updates

My Dell XPS 15 that I've had for 4 months now doesn't update successfully. It has been like this for the past 2 months. It shipped with Windows 10 loaded. When a cumulative update for Windows 10 became available last September, my computer automatically downloaded this update, and then tried to install it automatically when it thought was outside of my "active hours". However, up installing, I was at the blue update screen, when it took about 3 hours to reach 100%, then finally said "we couldn't complete the update, undoing changes". It would say this indefinitely for hours, until I got on chat support with Microsoft and they had me shut it off and do a system restore from advanced recovery options, which, without losing any of my files or programs (except for the most recent ones) my software was reverted back to the original one it was before this update. This temporarily fixed the problem, until the next day when my computer tried to install the update again. This time, however, I knew what to do, so I did my system restore. Then, before my computer could install the same update again, I used a Windows tool called Wushowhide to hide that update specifically. I will insert the link below for reference.

After using this, the problem seemed to be fixed, of course until the next update, which started the same problem once again. Because I can not hide the updates until they have already attempted installation, this cycle has been consistent about every two weeks, rendering my computer useless for up to a whole day, which is not good at all for a college student where homework is almost exclusively online. Over these past few months, I went through various chats with Microsoft in an attempt to fix this problem. I've tried, through them and on my own, many different things. Below I inserted a link of a tool used to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 with the option of keeping your files. After going through the 2 hour download and installation attempt, I receive a short, four word error message with no error code. "Windows 10 installation failed".

I'm not sure what to do now. Microsoft always seems to give me the same results and tactics. It's getting very frustrating.

    dcarozza6,

    Welcome to the forum!

So, where are you now? Can you boot to your original Windows 10, but still have the problems with the updates?

I had this exact issue. Every cumulative update since KB3194496 (Sept 29th, 2016) had failed to install. This included but was not limited to 3194496, 3194798, 3197954, and the most recent 3200970. All of these updates brought the build number up so I was stuck on 14393.187. Microsoft very quietly acknowledged the issue and, again, very quietly issued a script fix. It's a shame that users like you and I have to scour the internet for fixes to major problems. The script fix worked for me and I hope it works for you. If not there is a lengthy manual method of modifying the registry to fix the failed update issue.

    dcarozza6,

First of all, please let us know what Version and Build of Windows is currently installed on the computer.
Do so by typing the following into the search box in the lower left of the TaskBar:
    winver
Click the winver result at the top of the search.

In the prompt that appears, what is the Version and OS Build showing for Windows 10?

Also, please view the Update History:
Type the following into the search box in the lower left of the TaskBar: Update and Security
    Click: Check for updates
On the right, click: Update history

In the results that are shown, are there any Updates reported which failed or did not install?
If so, please provide their designation, i.e. KBxxxxxxx

    Thanks!
