Ryan, there is free, open-source software for just about everything you could possibly want to do on a computer. You tell us what you need, and we'll tell you what to get.

Let's do this, and get it right.

    Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums

Follow the instructions to do a custom install, so you can delete all partitions - looks like this:

Your key should be embedded in the BIOS, so don't enter one. If you want to grab it just because, use this to get it:

    Showkey - Windows 10 Forums

    .
Okay? Any questions, please ask before you start.

yeah I can do that, the only software on here is the HP support warranty stuff so Im not sure how that works if I wipe it clean. I just want to be able to keep it current with updates and put pro on it someday but if the drive is locked how do I get around that if it wouldnt let me reset it earlier?

Boot into your OS and turn Fast Startup off. See the link in a previous post for instructions (previous page).
HP support/warranty stuff is registered on their servers when you did that. You don't need it on your PC, just your login credentials for their site.

The HP warranty stuff is only their propaganda. Ignore it, you're covered by your serial number. The screen simrick shows of the partition will look different on yours. You will have several. Select each and DELETE. Each one, until you have only 1 big unallocated partition. That's where to install. Windows will do the rest.

ok sounds good to me. Ive done numerous system wipes in my day and this is my first run in with windows 10. so before I go hacking into it. Ive got the installation media on usb and the system restore flash drive as well so thats why I wont be needing all the drive partitions that are currently on it?

That is true. The HP recovery thumb will actually be kinda useless. Windows will make it's own recovery partition. It's best to start with a completely empty unallocated drive so there are no crumbs left over. Just delete all until you have just 1 and install there.

Do you have the key written down? You won't need to enter it, but it's just a safeguard to have it handy.

And do not have your ext drive attached.

Put the install thumb in. In My PC, open it with Explorer. Look at the bottom of the list of files, you'll see SETUP. Right click SETUP and click properties. Click the details tab. It will display the build and version. Post that back, please.
