    No WARNING long update

    Hi ALL,

On both my Win 10 PCs I got a long update that started when I shut down with no warning that there were any updates ready nor a notification that a restart was needed, either of which seemed to be the normal procedure. Then when on the screen saying not to turn off the PC there was no percentage indicating how far the update was proceeding. I could see the disk activity light blinking and the twirling dots never stopped but it stayed that way for at least 20 minutes, possibly more. Finally it shut down and when I turned it back on the was no update processing like what usually happens when other updates are installed. And lastly there was no notification that updates were installed, again what usually happens.

Does anyone know what this update did and why there was no warning nor percentage progress indicator.

    Thanks,
    Gerry

Did you check your installed updates to see what it might have been?

The last one that I received, which came via Windows update, was Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3167685), this past Friday (June 17th). It did not require a reboot.

Do you use Windows Defender? Perhaps it downloaded an update and needed a reboot. Hard to say.

    Hi roblinb,

Nope, it wasn't those updates as I also got them a day or two before this strange update. And with those updates I did get a notification that updates were available and that a restart was needed. Then I told it to restart right then and when it shut down I did have a percentage progress indicator and when it rebooted I also got a percentage progress indicator. And lastly once it was fully back up I got a notification that updates were installed.

With this update I got none of the above and just got into the "Do not turn your PC off" screen with the twirling dots. No percentage indicator, it took about 20 minutes or more and had no final processing upon reboot.

Also, I don't use Win Defender as I have Norton Security which takes care of all security stuff and it updates in a completely different way.

So it's still a mystery as to what that update accomplished and why it happened the they it did. That was why I posted here!

    Thanks,
    Gerry

    P. S. I just took a look at my Update History and it says that the update for Adobe Flash player was installed today so maybe that was it but I still find it hard to believe that kind of update would take 20 minutes or more and why there were not notifications or percentage indicators.
