I have not seen your follow-up on Never10.
Have you used essenbe's reply on post #15 ?
In short, does it work ?
I mean does it work for now ? I don't care how "temporary" it is, I am very much eager to know because I have many alumni not wanting to upgrade, period. So, I need to know if this will help.
Thank you.
Not yet. I'll probably run Never10 later today.
I have opened Regedit and snooped a little. Found that neither of the two keys with the settings for the update even exist. My understanding is that Never10 adds the keys if it doesn't find them, then sets the values to say "do not install Win 10".
You can create the key yourself and give it a value of 1. If the update is enabled, that key will not exist.
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade 1
Add that key to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
In other news, I removed the KB3035583 update yesterday. From what I've been able to learn, this is the Win 10 updater.
I have had my Windows Updates set to automatic. Last night, it found that I didn't have 3035583 any more and scheduled it for download, but didn't do the update. I'll just start checking routinely to see if it has sneaked it in anyway.
For now, I've set Windows Update to "Check for updates and let me choose whether to download and install them". Probably going to leave it that way temporarily, until after 7/29. Yeah, I know the security concerns, etc. I'll take my chances for 2 months. I've got good AV software, so I'm not exactly naked.
The main reason I've been leaving my PC on overnight is to run my backup software automatically at 3 AM. I'm temporarily going to run it manually every day when I finish work, then power off overnight.
If you download and install the Security Updates, you shouldn't. If you don't install them you will leave a vulnerability, but may be OK anyway. MS can remove that registry key with any update, any time it wants to. I would just check often and make sure.
I would hazard a guess that if you notice the $Windows.~BT Folder appear, you need to check the key again. You shouldn't get it with the update disabled.
