From Genuine to Pirated and Back to Genuine

I have a laptop with Windows 7 Home Basic OEM pre-installed, it was genuine and had COA on the bottom of laptop.
Accidentally, at that time I was 12 years old, so I don't know about 'crack', 'hack', software counterfeit, etc. . Thus, I thought my Windows was 'low', I want to upgraded it to Windows 7 Ultimate version with Windows Anytime Upgrade.

I searched key generator (keygen) on internet, I found it and generated the code (for Windows 7 Ultimate). Then, I pasted the serial number (product key) to Windows Anytime Upgrade. First, it was failed. So I cancelled the upgrade. But, when the laptop's shutdown and I turn it on again, it was upgrading to the Windows 7 Ultimate. How weird!

Now, I know the pirated / not genuine Windows is not safe, against the law, etc.

My question, is, I restored it to the genuine version of my Windows (7 Home Basic OEM) using my product key.
But I downloaded the setup using the Windows 7 Ultimate pirated (using keygen) that I told you...
Is my Windows become 'not genuine'?
After I restored it, It is very good, clean, doesn't contain virus or error, works perfectly. Then I upgraded it to Windows 10 Home.
Is it okay? Or I should buy the DVD to perform clean install so it is 100% clean?

    Need your opinion, please...
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forums..
If you did a clean instillation of the OEM copy of 7 with that key you should be fine. And then you can upgrade to 10.

From an elevated ("run as administrator") command prompt, run:

    slmgr /dlv

Post the results Window here and we can offer an informed opinion.

Windows 10 Home on that PC is genuine and will remain that way.

No need to buy anything , you could have just used the Win 10 install media with the Win 7 Home COA key.
The Win 7 install media does not reference the pirate key used to download (from MS I assume), and should be OK.

Windows 10 takes that pirated key and uses it. To go back to genuine (then upgrade to Win 10) try the find the key on the laptop/desktop's case and see if you can find the Windows 7 product key. (Please do not post the key on the forum!) and then click Change product key and it should maybe revert back? Idk, have never done it before, so please if I am not correct, please give me a friendly "Hey, that is not correct, this is correct:" or something like that with a Smile.

    Thanks!

You are good to go now. You have a legitimate activation for Home version.

Hi, i kind of have the same problem. but instead. i started on Windows 8 Home and upgraded to 8.1. Now that Windows 10 cameout, i installed it and my laptop became Windows 10 HOME. i Noticed that the Home version had stuff that i was interested in, to help me with some stuff, and yesterday i decided to "upgrade" to PRO which turned out to be unactivated and now im stuck on PRO without Customisation Options and a WaterMark. is there a way to go back to HOME without losing any of my APPS.

i tried a restore and right after it upgraded to PRO without no warning. what will a Reset do if i chose to keep my files. can someone make a list of the files that i should copy to keep the games and apps like Minecraft, steam, uplay, and everything else.

i know i should copy Program Files (x86) and Program Files. but will USERS/username be touched aswell. ive search and nothing came up. please help with something, it will be great if you can answer anything about this. and whats the best thing i can do.

You could try resetting to Home in the registry.

In regedit go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion and set Product Name to "Windows 10" and EditionID and CompositionEditionID to "Home"

Then do an in-place upgrade which will keep all your apps and settings.

Then reboot. As you were activated before you should be activated OK on Home.

didnt work. when it finished downloading it said failed to validate product KEY. looks like i stuffed up. damn i hate Microsoft and this crap. also $300 just to fix this is stupid. also the Key is now where to be found. if i do a full reset it might not let me reinstall Windows 10 HOME as that is what it should be installing not PRO, but because the KEY is lost HOME wont be activated probably aswell. ill just copy everything over to my 1TB HDD and then copy everything over. hopefully that works.
