    win10pro keeps going unauthorised

This has happened 3 times now. I reload from a previous backup and all is fine. Maybe a month after the "activate windows" text comes up bottom right of desktop and when I check the activation it says windows reported a hardware change. There was a hardware change (mobo)by DELL but then new windows was installed by their engineer. So for this PC now effectively there has NOT been a hardware change.

I am sich of having to reload a previous backup and lose all my latest config!
Dell blames microsoft and microsoft blames dell. MS say that the original license is for windows 8 pro and therefore not 10 pro. But dell say that is normal (that the very first iteration of their engineers install could be from a win8 pro in the first instance.and they haven't allowed win 8 on their PCs for years.

Does anyone have any ideas how to deal with this?
Does it matter anyway? will I still get full functionality and updates?
or Do I tell them both to do one and change all my effing PCs to PIRATE versions and never buy legal again????? I actually would never do this but the way I feel at the moment I just want to STICK IT TO THE MAN if you get my drift!

any help (other than go pirate!) will be muchly appreciated - thanks

btw I ran the power shell script and the only thing that jumps out is at the beginning with licensing status as "SL-GEN-STATE-INVALID-LICENSE. which is what I see of course.

ps last time I spoke to MS they said it would not happen again because now the 10pro digital license is tied to my Microsoft account. With that turns out to be BS! even when logged in the only useful option is to buy a new license from the MSstore!
and what's to say I don't do that and it happens again anyway?

    Hi,

Infuriating is the word... Since you are near recovering a backup, what happens if you run

    Code:
    Slmgr.vbs /rearm
Another good reason to go with retail liscense

    @felox

If/when you talk to MS again... request to talk to an "Advocate".

Right click on start & choose powershell with admin & enter: slmgr.vbs /dlv This will show a popup showing whether your license is OEM, Retail, or Volume amongst other information.
If OEM then have you changed anything - say Motherboard?

yes it's oem. Dell replaced the mobo but they also put a new windows install on.

Since you have a new motherboard...

Digital license is saved on the UEFI firmware or BIOS chipset of the motherboard. If you want to release the currently installed key, You can try, while at the command prompt, enter the following command: slmgr.vbs /upk. and then /rearm These command should uninstalls the product key and put windows back in activation mode, then try to activate Windows with your ms account this should write a new key...For this to be viable you need to activate the right version of windows... If this fails... Welcome to the Digital world.

Next I would head on to "Windows Pro Retail specials of the month", on Amazon...

This is how customers are treated today.

    so I did this...
changed the key to a retail license but this did not work - still said hardware change and windows not activated

    then I...
    removed the license
    disabled the network adapter
    slmgr.vbs /rearm
    added the retail license
checked it was in the system with slmgr.vbs /dvi - it was
    rebooted
    re-enabled the network

    now both licenses work fine!!!!

so this was not a problem with the license but with something in windows. I suspect that I could have used the initial license but offline then rebooted and activated online. - not sure if rearm was needed or not

has anyone seen this type of thing before? Is it likely to be cured by a fresh install?

When Dell replaces a motherboard they are supposed to send you a new prod. key in a small envelope as the new board is not factory key embedded - unless service techs are inserting in into the OEM recovery partition now via pid.txt or something - may wanna check that out.

Anyway, not sure which two licences you are referring to but post the full diagnostic report - you may be in a grace period and your activation will get bombed again if that is the case.
