Update not working on Windows 10

    Hi all,

It appears i have run into an odd problem and no amount of googling has shown me any remedy.

I have windows 10 Pro installed not via an upgrade. At first i was able to use the update and security tap under settings but recently that is no longer working. If i go to the settings, update & security the top moving line runs but nothing is ever displayed or updated. I do not see any advanced options either on that page. I have attached a image of what i get.

Windows is activated and everything else functions properly.
Really unsure as to what the problem may be, so any assistance would be very welcome.

    Many thanks

    :)

    Hi Silas,

Most probably the problem is the Background Intelligence transfer service not working or in cases, any of the Windows update related services.
Please run the troubleshooters named Background Intelligence transfer service and Windows update from Control Panel>Troubleshooting>View all and reply back with what is fixed/not fixed.

    Hi Sumitdhiman,

I have done as you suggested and the problem remains.

From the control panel, the windows troubleshooter states: Windows Update Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem.

Windows update service is running and Background Intelligent Transfer Service is running.

The update & security page remains as same as the image i posted.

    Thanks.:)

Do a reset first before trying out other steps :)

    Hi Sumitdhiman,

i did the reset using the bat file, rebooted and ran the trouble shooter which now reports:

    An error occurred while trobleshooting:

A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting. The required services are all running.

The update & security from settings is still the same.

    Thanks for the assist.:)

SFC command done but with the following results:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any intergrity violations. So the problem remains unfortunately.

    Thanks for your help though.:)

    Hi silas,
Go to services and disable Windows Update service, reboot and enable it and see whether it fixes the problem. HTH.
EDIT: If you have any third party AV program running, stop it and use only the defender.

    Hi brummyfan,

thanks for the input. Unfortunately that did not work. It appears my windows defender is disabled and i cannot re-enable it.

" This application is turned off by group policy

To allow this application to run contact your security admin to enable the program via group policy."

I went into group policy but was unable to turn windows defender on from there. Do you think defender needs to be running to run windows update?

I think maybe a repair install is required to fix this. Will contemplate that this afternoon.

    Many thanks

just a point I had a similar problem do you have Norton security installed or bulldog as these do not work well with win 10 what ever they say. I removed Norton using the Norton uninstaller rebooted which set defender going and update working. then installed bulldog and got the same problem defender seems to make it very difficult to run any other av firewall. I have avira av installed and working now with windows firewall which allows windows update to work with no problems.

to add I cant remember if I had to turn on defender or if it did so its self but its just a case of sliding the greyed out arrow to on which it would not do while Norton was installed.
