how to find size of download

Hello, I have minimal data per month, how do I find out how large the windows updates are? I have had windows 10 for four months and have run out of data allowance in three of those months, now I have another update about to happen and I cannot turn it off and I do need to turn off my laptop.

You will have to check each update ahead of time. The size shows at the beginning of the download and of course once you stored it.

Also make sure you have got windows delivery update optimisation switched off

settings, update and security, windows update, advanced options, choose how updates are delivered, and switch off updates from more than one place (or if you leave it on select pcs on my local network).

This way, you will not use your limited bandwidth feeding updates to other on web (basically using your pc like a torrent server).

Hi Kyla, welcome to the Ten Forums.

Your system specs don't give too much information but the one crucial piece of information is there to be seen: you have a laptop. As almost all laptops by default come with a wireless network adapter and assuming you have a wireless router, here's a suggestion how to never use your quota for Windows updates (exception: so called priority updates will be downloaded):

    • Connect your laptop to network using only the wireless connection, do not use a wired Ethernet connection
    • Set your home wireless connection as metered (tutorial). Windows does not download updates over a metered connection (exception: so called priority updates will be downloaded). A wired Ethernet connection cannot be set metered
    • When you need to / want to download Windows Updates, take the laptop with you to a café, library, school, workplace or any other place where you get either free or pay per usage WiFi and do the updates
    • Alternatively, at the end of the billing period if you still have plenty of quota to use, connect the laptop to the home router via Ethernet cable, removing it as soon as the updates are done

    That's it.
