What happens to Win7 License after upgrading to Windows 10?

I have a Family 3-Pack of Windows 7 Home Premium installed and activated on 3 PCs using the same Product Key.

If I upgrade one of the PCs to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, does that free up one of the Windows 7 licenses to use on another PC?

You have a license for 3 installations of Windows and 3 only. It can be any combination of Windows 7 or upgrades to Windows 10 but only 3 total.

No. That win 7 key is still tied up to the system which is now running Win 10.
    Can't use it to a 4th computer.

Quick clarification: If I upgrade from 7 to 10 in order to get the PC activated on Microsoft's servers for my free upgrade, then restore my Windows 7 image to continue using it for a while - am I all set in terms of licensing? I am using either one or the other and all is cool?

Yes. You'll be ok in that case.

I just updated on another W7 PC (not a clean install). It went much better than I expected. I am pleasantly surprised. I may just keep it.

My Office machine is much more complex.

Yes. Cut Win 10 some slacks. Get used to it. It's not as bad as some insist.
I have one running RTM Home version 10586, and one running Insider Preview 11082. I have no issues at all.
There are programs I detest, but I don't have to use them.

Agreed. I find it fairly customizable with some notable exceptions.
But I am working on it now. It will look like Win 7 by days end.
