Build 11082 fails to complete installation
Starting a new thread as the search function didn't find any posts about installation failure similar to my issue.
I am an "Insider", on the fast ring. Build 11082 fails to install, no error messages are shown. The 1st stage (installing files) appears to complete OK. System then reboots and starts Installing features and drivers, gets to 6% then stalls. First attempt the system auto reverted to Restoring previous version. Second attempt to install; the system hung at the same point (6% drivers and features.) A mouse pointer was still shown, but there was no response from the keyboard, so no Ctrl Alt Del. I force powered off after 5 minutes. On restarting, in the boot options Setup was preselected (my system dual boots "Insider" and the released version.) Booted to Setup, and it restored the previous version, (then) Build 10586.29.
If my memory is correct each time a new build has been installed the first stage (installing files) shows an oval on my screen (16 x 10, [1920 x 1200]), then after the restart a circle is shown. With both these attempts the oval has been shown during the (never-completed) second stage.
I have Office 365 version 16.0.6366.2036 installed, and downloaded and installed the Norwegian (Bokmål) language pack a few days ago. Now the Office Update Options messages are in Norwegian! I wonder if that language pack is the source of this update issue. The list of known faults was what made me wonder if the Norwegian language pack was what was causing the failure.
As the Norwegian language pack did not appear to cleanly uninstall, I restored an image I had taken some days previously, prior to installing the language pack.
I ran Sfc /scannow, it wasn't able to fix all the faults it found. I then ran DISM RestoreHealth, it completed successfully, ran sfc /scannow again. It then fixed all the faults it found.
I deleted all files in C:\Windows/SoftwareDistribution\Download.
There were 6 updates, plus the build 11082 upgrade, waiting for installation after checking for updates after restarting from the restored and cleaned image. The other 6 updates installed correctly, but 11082 failed again at the same point, 6% Installing features and drivers, no error message, just reverted to build 10586. Friday morning another cumulative update, (KB3124200) showed up, along with build 11082. I updated the NVidia driver for my video card prior to attempting the W10 updates, as the failure to install 11082 occurs while installing drivers, (wondered if there was a driver incompatibility.)
11082 stalled at 6% Installing features & drivers again. And again without any error message, just the message that it was reverting to the previous installation.
Update history does not have any reference to these failures to install build 11082, but shows the other updates (6 Thursday, 1 Friday) as successfully installed.
Winver now reports Version 1511 (OS Build 10586.36) This is the same as is reported on my Surface Pro 2 and the (dual booted) release version which is installed on a separate SSD in my desktop computer. Both of those installations also have the latest cumulative update, (KB3124200).
Poking around in the (Insider) registry unearthed references to rs1_release (in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability) (see attached WindowsSelfHost-Applicablility.png)
but HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion shows BuildBranch as th2_release and the Build as 10586.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade\Rollback\ refers to 10.0.11082.100 (see attached WindowsUpdate.png)
I don't have enough knowledge to interpret these registry entries, other than to check out the error codes that are given in these entries (no real help found)
I have now attempted to upgrade 6 times with the same results, always hangs at 6% Installing features and drivers (32% overall). I tried it with my AV and Firewall shut down - no difference.
I'll appreciate any suggestions which will enable me (my system) to clear this hurdle!
