    Windows Update error 0x800706d9

So a few days ago I started having issues with Windows Update. It attempts to download but fails after a few seconds. I had security updates to Visual C++, as well as the 1511 Cumulative Update. I kept getting an error message for all three, something like this:
    Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3116908) - Error 0x800706d9

I tried various remedies I found online, but none worked. I finally fixed it, somewhat, by using WSUS Offline, which installed the Visual C++ updates, but not the cumulative one. I checked Winver and it says I have v1511 build 10586.14. So I should already HAVE that update. Why is it still offering it, then?

One of the results for this error code had something to do with Windows Firewall not running. Of course it's not, I have ESET Smart Security. Another suggested a Windows Fix-It Tool for this, and I got the response "service registration is missing or corrupt." Found various remedies for THAT, none of which worked. I stopped and restarted all the required services, and set some that weren't automatic to auto. Still nothing. Cleared the update download folder. Still nothing. Ran CCleaner and rebooted. Still nothing. How do I fix this annoying service error?

I found out from some searching that this error relates to Windows Firewall. I read another Windows 10 user's post on one of these many 0x800706d9 threads on the Microsoft site that the fix is to re-enable Windows Firewall in Services. Right-click it, select Properties, set startup to Automatic, and click Start. You should be able to update now.

Thank you so much for posting the solution.

I stumbled upon this stupid error and wasn't able to install some programs because windows firewall was disabled.

Thats really very stupid of M$hit to force you to use their firewall.

Microsoft doesn't force you to use their firewall (see the attached screen capture):

I use Norton Internet Security to protect my computer and it works flawlessly. It never bothers me...updates and scans automatically and as I said, is a firewall, anti-malware and anti-virus. Try a free trial and see for yourself.

No, not forced, however as leechap stated, the update fails if the WINDOWS firewall is not enabled.

TY to AbdoZaghloul for the correct answer.

Huge thanks, I have spent hours trying to figure this out, wish I had seen this earlier. Worked like a charm once I re-enabled windows firewall. Now why we have to do this in this manner when most of us have our own antivirus and firewall options is beyond me.

    Thanks again :-)

If they won't let you run a certain kinds of processes, updates or cmdlets without activating windows Firewall, that's called forcing you to use their firewall.

PS: Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are two different things (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items) At the bottom you'll see Windows Defender and Windows Firewall as two separate items and in services "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools\services.lnk" you will probably find that the windows firewall service is still running despite having Norton installed, and in fact if you look it up, you'll find that Norton Requires it to be active in order to Run, if you turn it off Norton won't work.

Unfortunately some programs (specifically the web based programs my company uses for remote employees, Brother Printer administrative programs, and others) are blocked by Windows Firewall, so it's necessary to deactivate it in order to use your (or at least my) program(s).

    Thank You

I had found that the error was related to the Windows Firewall but was unable to turn it on. It was the detail in your posting--to re-enable the feature via Services--that has resolved several problems I've been experiencing. Thank you for sharing the detail (and good karma to the poster from whom you discovered it).

    My point is this:

You don't want the Windows Firewall on, fine, nether do I. But if you create a shortcut to the services, you can turn on the Firewall service at your convenience to run updates, and stop it again the same way when finished updating.

That at least will give you a short term fix, and hopefully, MicroOops will correct it.

You are perfectly within your rights to go back to your previous version of Win until you feel comfortable with moving to 10.

Hope this is a little more specifically helpful than my previous post.

    1. Right click Start menu > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services ( "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools\Services.lnk" )

    2. Right click Windows Firewall > Start

    3. Run Updates

3 Services > Right click Windows Firewall > Stop

Annoying? Yes. Will it work? Yes.
