    Update build 10586 has destroyed parts of my computer


    Hi guys, so as soon as I heard about the new build, I went to install it. After it finished and booted back up, it displayed several notifications about removing apps because they weren't compatible, well thanks for confirming this with me


    Then I come to find that a game won't start from Steam, but when I launch it directly, it says MFPlat.DLL is missing. After doing a bit of Googling, it turns out that's a DLL including in the Windows 10 Media Feature Package, which then caused me to realise that the update killed off Windows Media Player and several codecs, I've also lost the ability to view PDFs in the Edge browser. Again, thanks for confirming this with me.


    So, I tried to reinstall the Windows 10 MFP again, rebooted and... Well, nothing. Nothing changed at all, still getting the DLL error, still can't view PDFs and Media Player is still non-existent. I then found a second MFP for Windows 10 that was about 3 times the size of the first one, I thought great, larger means more stuff, it'll likely have all the things I wanted, but attempting to install it fails stating that a certificate is invalid or not found. Looking around for that error suggest I get that error because the package is already installed, but it's not. So I can only assume its due to the first one I installed, but hey this is Windows 10 and every user is dumb as hell so they can't manage the updates themselves. I tried uninstalling it with wusa.exe anyway (of course) with absolutely no success and then tried to install the package I want over the top by extracting the .msu and using dism.exe to attempt to install it, but that fails in just about every way as well.

    How can I get this thing back on track? I just want that damn MFP because I'm on the N edition of Windows 10 Pro so I can have my Media Player back and get that darn DLL crap sorted.

    I really do like Windows 10, but I'm hating so much about it right now.

    That sounds like it is annoying. :-(

    To start at the beginning: Since you don't have an "N" edition of Windows 10, Windows Media Player is a part of your version of Windows 10 and it should be there. If it no longer is there for you, then you should install this Windows feature again.

    Do not confuse Windows Media Center with Windows Media Player. WMC is no longer supported in Windows 10, WMP is still included.

    Have to agree with Joergi and Mystere, no problem with WMP/Windows Media Player.

    An issue I see is your System Specs does say you have the N version of Win10

    What N means is the version was intended for some countries in Europe due to various lawsuits against Microsoft and consumers in those countries wanting different choices instead of built-in media players [and probably some other things].
    Having the N version isn't a big issue, just don't get everything the non-N version has. And it may have been a bit cheaper.

    Hmm you learn something new everyday. I did not know there was a N version. Anyhow Im not in Europe and I have Windows 10 home anyways. nothing missing for me so far.

    I do have the "N" edition, I'm sorry I noticed a typo I put "K" instead of "N", so no Media Player is not a part of my installation which means I need to install the Media Feature Pack (KB3010081) which I have tried as I also explained in my first post, but after a restart the Media Player is still non-existent which is part of my problem.

    I haven't confused them and fully understand the difference between them, as I've been saying all along, I'm running the N edition which means I need the Media Feature Pack which I have installed, it's just not working at all, if it helps to reassure you that I know it's not working, the mfplat.dll is also non-existent after installing the Media Feature Pack.

    Yes, that is correct, which means if I do want those features (which I do, and need) I have to install the Media Feature Pack (KB3010081), but it's not working after I install it.

    It's because I have the N version that I'm missing stuff. I can get it all with the Media Feature Pack... When it works I got my Windows 7 licence key for free by my university through Microsoft's DreamSpark program, so I had no choice other than either 32bit or 64bit. I would have chosen the normal edition if I could.

    Why not just download the complete version using the Media Creation Tool and install that version? You show as being in UK and the N version wasn't for the UK Market.

    Solved!


    Got a fix, got the dll and media player back. MS just released the MFP for this build.
