Hello shysstkille, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Unless you used the method in the tutorial below on your activated Windows 7/8.1 PC before doing a clean install of Windows 10 on the PC, then that would be why Windows 10 didn't activate.

Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First

You'll need to clean install and activate your Windows 7 or 8.1 on the PC, then either use the tutorial above or below to go to Windows 10.

It could also be that you did not install the version of Windows 10 that your previous Windows 7/8/8.1 would have upgraded to if you did just the normal, in place upgrade.

I read that in upcoming versions Microsoft wants to make directly activating a clean install possible.

    Finally!

    Yep. :)

Starting in Windows 10 Insider Preview build 10565:

Device activation improvements: Microsoft has received a lot of feedback from Insiders on making it easier to activate Windows 10 on devices that take advantage of the free upgrade offer to genuine Windows by using existing Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 product keys. If you install this build of the Windows 10 Insider Preview on a PC and it doesn’t automatically activate, you can enter the product key from Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 used to activate the prior Windows version on the same device to activate Windows 10 by going to Settings > Update & security > Activation and selecting Change Product Key. If you do a clean install of Windows 10 by booting off the media, you can also enter the product key from prior Windows versions on qualifying devices during setup. Refer to the Insider Hub for more information on these activation improvements including requirements.

Sounds like this also works, if you have already done the upgrade. Meaning: Upgraded to Windows 10 doing a clean install. Windows 10 will not activate. Wait for the according update to land in Windows 10, then go to the Settings app and activate WIndows.

Would be great, if that finally worked. However, we will have to wait until it's released not only as an Insider Build, but really in Windows 10 in order to see, if it actually works this way!
