    Windows 10 free upgrade

    Hi,
I read with interest your articles about windows 10 upgrade installation,I tried the link in the article to downloads windows 10 iso,but appears the link is leading to retail downloads site and the iso cannot be used to upgrade to windows 10,I then tried downloaded the media creation tools but it did not run in my windows 7 OS,I then manage to find an option to upgrade to windows 10 as an update option,I opted this and windows 10 free upgrade started and completed successfully,I tried the media creation tools they, they run in windows 10 os so I downloaded the windows 10 iso, this has built in key but this key cannot be used for activation, windows 10 become activated as part of the free upgrade from Microsoft, this downloaded iso file I used to do standalone installation of windows 10,the installation run successfully by choosing skip enter product key but windows 10 cannot activate with this key, though installed on same PC that runs the free upgrade, your article said that win10 will recognizes the hardware and automatically become activated, but this did not happens.
In the article about dual boot windows 10,according to Microsoft advice is to have the older version os installed first,in this case would be windows 7,then after making new partition windows 10 can be installed as standalone installation but it cannot be activated free unless installed as an upgrade to windows 7 that was active.
    Thank you.

    Hi alim!

You don't tell us, which tutorial and which link you have used.
The following tutorial would have worked: Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 Forums

    > I then manage to find an option to upgrade to windows 10 as an update option,
    > I opted this and windows 10 free upgrade started and completed successfully

So at this point you have been runnig Windows 10. Actually this is the deciding point for whether you now have trouble with activation or not:
If this upgrade had been started from inside Windows 7 (e.g. using the Get Windows 10 app), then this upgraded installation of Windows 10 will activate. It may take some time, but it will. You can make Windows activate itself directly, by visiting the new Settings app and checking the activation status there. If Windows 10 has not tried activating itself before, it will do so at this point.
If the upgrade in contrast has been done somehow differently (e.g. from outside Windows 7), then Windows 10 will not activate.

    > I used to do standalone installation of windows 10,
    > the installation run successfully by choosing skip enter product key
    > but windows 10 cannot activate with this key

This will happen, if Windows 10 had never before been activated on that PC. You cannot change the activation status by entering a key - except you buy one, which you don't need to, as you are entitled to get the upgrade for free.

Hi,Thank you for the reply, the tutorial was (Windows 10 iso downloads),Windows 10 Forums
download.html, the options was option one to directly downloads windows 10 from Microsoft, the link opens to retail downloading, this cannot be used to make standalone installation after free upgrade as you need to enter valid key to
continue, the option two was through the media creation tools, which did not works in my windows 7,I have upgraded to windows 10 from within windows 7 within the automatic update option,I found list of optional updates one was for windows 10,I
selected this option and installation of windows 10 started and completed and windows 10 was activated,I tried the media creation tools they run now within windows 10,so I managed to downloads the windows 10 iso file as this file has the option to skip entering key,I then tried installing windows 10 with this iso file (That I downloaded by Media creation tools) on a new partition on the same PC that upgraded to windows 10 free as standalone installation, but the installed windows did not automatically activated windows 10 as expected,I tried online activation but it was not accepted.

There is no difference in a"retail" ISO and "upgrade" ISO. It's all the same Windows 10 and the same ISO file that can be used to clean install or upgrade. You probably downloaded and installed the wrong version of Windows 10 as in Pro, home, single language or N.

So you have upgraded Windows hrough Windows Update and afterwards Windows 10 showed that it was activated.

That means that you should be able to install Windows 10 again on the same PC (the harddrive partition on which you do that should be irrelevant) and it should activate again.

I am not sure, why Windos 10 won't activate for you.

Maybe the Microsoft hotline can help you. You might try one of the options of slui on the commandline. E.g. the command

    slui 4

should open the activation tool with the option to activate by phone!

    Hi,
I have downloaded windows 10 pro single language as my windows is 10 pro,so I presume I did the correct thing,on trying to install it, the first screen asked for entering key with no option to continue without entering a correct key unlike the one obtained by the Media creation tools there is option to skip entering the key.

Wrong version. Should have downloaded Windows 10 Pro - not single language.

Downloading both the 32bit and 64bit versions will not fit on a standard DVD - just be aware of that. Since you have 8gb memory you need to install the 64bit version of Windows 10 Pro.
