Just did the wife's PC, which is a 32bit OS, other than that the setup & settings are mostly the same ......
and surprise surprise hers finished successfully![]()
Sadly the sfc /scannow fix didn't work for me. I ran it, there were no integrity violations, but I re-booted immediately then tried manually again. Still exactly the same problem. At least I don't get caught in a loop and can hide the update using MS hide update utility. It's called wushowhide.diagcab. Small executable (no installation) made by MS - at least that's something that was good - but not publized of course. Easily downloadable, even hides defender updates! Not that there is any point in that. We can choose what to hide, and what to "unhide" later.
The error I have consistently had one two PCs is 0x80004005. I believe this is connected to ethernet/internet connections. I have manually upgraded to the latest NIC drivers. Tested. Tried the speed test - very fast as always over 50mbs down 40mbs up. PC works just fine.
I'll just wait and see if a fix for people with the above error code becomes available. All the other fixes (thanks everyone for the great input :)) don't work for me on both PCs. No point stressing. PC runs fine.
Even Microsoft is a bit perplexed...!

So, should I restore my image that I took before this update, or just keep running with this failure and hope MS fixes this?
Great, I will restore my IMAGE, and continue from there. I did d/l wushowhide but wonder if I should wait to reinstall this KB next week to see if MS fixed anything with this KB? I DO have auto updates turned off so they will NOT be installed until I say so if I do restore my image! I suppose I can "PLAY" with some of the tricks in this thread but a lot of people say nothing has worked for them!
I don't think anyone could really answer you...
I am too stuck in your position: should I restore the system, hoping something magically makes the update install, or should I wait? Since the update isn't so urgent, I think I will wait a little. Then I will try restoring the image.
By the way, someone solved doing the upgrading again. Essentially it took another Windows 10 image and installed it as it was an update (like you did passing from Windows 7/8 to 10). It worked. In this way you don't even need to lose your file.
