It seems that every since I installed this busted update manually that my Opera browser has been crashing, I know it doesn't make any sense but the Opera problems started exactly after I installed the update.

You should probably roll back with a restore point or a system image backup created before you installed the update. Then try to reinstall the update automatically via Windows updates, since it seems that the bug has been fixed by Microsoft.

I have two PCs : one only runs Windows 10 and the other is running on a dual boot Win 10 and Win 7 64-bit. After manually applying the update on the first PC, I went to automatically update the second PC and it worked. I don't use Opera Browser, but you should also checked if you are running on the latest version. I hope this helps.

    WINDOWS 10

Probably not helpful but worked for me

It would not install for me at first either during auto updating after 5 attempts I noticed. I have found that at least for me, since installing Windows 10 and with all the updates that will not install and have errors, if I tried to reinstall them myself in Windows Update anywhere from about 3 to 8 times they always would install correctly eventually.

hey always would install correctly eventually.

    Windows 10

KB3087040 shows to me as ready to install and it also shows in the list of successfully installed updates. Actually it shows as having been installed twice yesterday 10/3 and once today 10/4 as well as waiting to be installed, wait looking further down it also installed on 9/22 and 9/23. The only reason that I went to look at updates is that 2 or 3 times in the past 2 days the computer has been shut down with no obvious reason. No error in the event log but one when I turn it back on saying the last shut down was unexpected. But I would never know it because I never go through any of the check disc stuff I used to in Windows 7.

Anyone else have this installed multiple times and why is Microsoft reusing KB numbers if they different updates?

This is very weird and unheard of. Something definitely went awry in the registry. If I were in your shoes, I would first uninstall the update (all versions of it) and run a good Registry Cleaner (CCleaner for example). Then I would make a restore point as a benchmark. Then for good measure, I would run SFC /Scannow and chkdsk on your C:\ drive and finally reinstall the update.
