Interesting that you should zero in on McAfee. Although I believe I had their virusscan installed in the distant past, it was not shown as a current app. I went to their website and obtained their uninstall tool (by contacting an actual live person on their chat line) and ran it. I removed the SuperAntiSpyware app via the usual Windows method, although I don't believe it was actually running. I don't think I have any other antivirus, firewall or drive encryption software other than Widows Defender installed. I then carefully followed your recommended procedure for performing an in-place upgrade repair. This was the exact procedure I had performed previously, although this time I did download a fresh copy of the windows 10 iso. Unfortunately, I got the same result as when I tried it previously, i.e. I got a message that the procedure failed at about 60% completion, with no explanation.
I assume there was something in the V2 log that alerted you to McAfee and superantispyware. When I get a bit more free time I'll re-run the V2 bat and post the results so you can see if the removal procedure I followed was effective.

"And so often I recommend, as do others, the routine and regular use of 3rd party disk imaging of at least all O/S partitions to external storage."
Is there any particular 3rd party disk imaging app that you would recommend?

Here's the results from upgrade failure info
I'm having less luck with Windows Health check and setupdiag. Windows Health check tells me that my PC won't run windows 11, but I see no way to copy the results. setupdia opens a command prompt for a second, then closes it. The documentation claims it is supposed to create a log file in the same place it is run from, but I've tried running it from a couple of different places and there is no log file.
This is all getting quite frustrating

Macrium Reflect (paid) - the free version is stuck on a build of Jan '24 but still available.
Hasleo Backup- free - Chinese- includes best features of MR paid. Newer.
Aomei Backupper - free/paid - Chinese - been around a long time.
O&O Diskimage - German- periodically given away.
Not Acronis..
There are numerous threads reviewing these. Compare carefully what's in the free versions. All offer boot disks.

Depending on what's been done to your registry by whatever it was you ran, your O/S may not be recoverable- and even if it seems to be, you won't be quite sure something won't turn round and bite you later. This is all getting quite frustrating
Unless you're very lucky, suggest you prepare for a clean install, lesson learnt. Back up securely and appropriately. E.g.
Periodic disk imaging (full + differentials, for example), complemented by a daily System Restore point created on schedule (Tutorial).
Then additionally back up fast changing key data that matters.
