Windows Update cant connect to service? but have manually updated

    Hi all,

As the title states, we're getting the "error encountered" within the update window, "cant connect to update service" - we need this to happen in order to enable troubleshooting on another program. I'd like to point out that we went through the update assistant and have manually installed Version 22H2 after being on 20H2 so I guess we're up to date now but the error code is still there so this post is more of a "would be good to get rid of" rather than needing urgent action...please correct me if im wrong.

I've gone through various threads and done the following -

    - Reset windows components: downloaded the .bat file, restarted, nothing (note it did ask to restart at the end but nothing happened, I then forced restart so not sure if this isn't completing the process?)

    - Turn off Proxy
    - Connected to internet
    - Checked the window update service is running
    - Clear windows update cache
    - Checked firewall settings

Windows version number - 22H2, manually installed, comes under winver, under installed updates it comes under as KB5007401 and KB5026361

    Check you can connect:

    Another possibility:
    Check /change your DNS:
    4. Change your network DNS
Press Start then click Settings(Gear icon)
    Select Network and Internet
    Click Change adapter settings
    a. To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click the Ethernet interface and select Properties
    b. To change the settings for a wireless connection, right-click the Wi-Fi interface and select Properties
Under Networking tab, double click TCP/IPv4
Select Use the following DNS server addresses. If there are any IP addresses listed in the Preferred DNS server or Alternate DNS server, write them down for future reference.
Replace those addresses with the IP addresses below
    Preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4
    Click Ok

Better still, use DNSjumper (free) to find the fastest easily.

    Use the bat file here:
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

    Still no luck?
What does the Windows Update troubleshooter report?

Does another device on the same network receive Windows updates?

What 3rd party security programs do you have installed?

Full build number is e.g. like this:
    winver
    -> 19045.5011

22H2 is NOT a full build number.

    Hi Dalchina,

Thanks so much for your prompt reply!

    Please see the following:

Can I connect...? - I ran that command through, albeit I don't know what i'm looking for - its looking very similiar to your screenshot, some lines are just " *, *, * request timed out" but not all

DNS - ive changed this but doesn't seem like its done anything
Bat File - ive used that, as mentioned in my previous post, it requests restart but actually doesn't do anything when I press any button...I will manually restart - not sure if this completes the process the same way?
Windows update troubleshooter - First time before applying fixes it couldn't identify anything but now its apparently fixed some settings that were changed.
Yes, other devices on the same network recieves updates - please note we are using computers in a workplace.
We had AVG installed but now removed as suggested before.

    Winver is 19045.2965

It wasn't definitively clear to which BAT file your first post referred - so that was just 'a' BAT file.. (there are others 'out there').

Odd- you could post a question under the tutorial...

    Windows update troubleshooter -
Please post a screenshot showing the details. Thanks.

Yes, other devices on the same network receive updates
Ah- so not a network issue. That's significant.

we are using computers in a workplace.
On the Windows Update pages in Settings, do you see any red text relating to an 'organisation'?

Have a look at these and reset as required:

    Hi Dalchina,

Let me get back to you tomorrow if that's okay - just finishing up for the day.

Thanks so much for your current suggestions.

    - - - Updated - - -

    Hi Dalchina,

Sorry for the radio silence. Going back to our conversation - I tested another alternative option just to see what would happen, alas no change. The computer in question, before I forget, is used on its own as a render box (local render farm).

Just for more context (not sure if this changes anything), we did have an internal network upgrade? We had a technician come in and I don't know enough to know what changes he made to various settings etc, not sure if this might be the cause. I double checked this morning, we're all on the same settings - I plugged the ethernet from my local pc into the render box and still made no difference to the windows update screen so yes - i dont think it is a network issue?

We're going to get in touch with our technician now but to answer your above questions -

Bat file - Yes, the reset windows components bat file has been run, again doesn't restart on its own after pressing any button not sure if this renders the process incomplete if I do it myself.

Ran each relevant troubleshooter - "couldn't identify the problem".

red text relating to an 'organisation'? - yes, I had that but managed to change this under policies and now its gone.

I assume you've reset things as per my screenshots.

Is there anything in the Hosts file that shouldn't be there?

    Do Store downloads/updates work?

Radical- just to prove a point- remove the internal system disk, clean install Win 10 on another disk, and see if that updates...(!)
