Windows Update keeps getting stuck at configuring

Hello, I am having an issue with Windows Update lately - freezes at Configuring Updates at a certain % even the spinning circle freezes! I reboot from power button and it happens over and over until I am able to get to Startup Recovery whereby I do a System Restore.

This first happened last month and I paused Updates for a few weeks and today it happened all over again. Once again I go back to an earlier restore point.

I ran the Windows Update troubleshooter and also the BAT file from this forum. I have also performed DISM and SFC.

I suppose I could try Updates again (currently paused) but is there any way in finding out if a corrupt software or driver is the cause here?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, please look at your Update History and identify the problem update.

and also the BAT file from this forum.
    - there are many.
Do you mean you used this?
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

You should start by checking your disk(s) e.g. with Crystal Diskinfo (free).
    If ok, run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt.

How much free space do you have on C: ?

If ok, you can proceed to an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data (tutorial available).

    I have 260GB free space on C:

I ran the Reset Win Tool above and chkdsk - all fine.

Tried Windows Update again and same issue this time freezing on 99%!

As it's a pretty old laptop now (11 years) and I cannot update it to Win 11, I have decided to purchase a new laptop. Thanks for your help on this.

That one needs to be run as administrator (right click) run as admin if SAFE Mode without internet connected using the reset windows update components option.

Once reset restart PC and connect to internet. Reconfigure Windows Update options then launch a manual check for updates.

Also you don't say if you have windows 10 Pro but if you do have it then configure updates to notify only. Then wait a few days after an update is released before downloading it and installing it.
