3rd party update programs that work like windows update

    Hello there.
I am totally blind and I use a text to speech screen reader program called NVDA
I am unable to use programs like windows update mini tool or portable update, because they don't work very well with screen readers, in fact, the mini tool doesn't work at all with NVDA.
About the only tool I have found that works so far is windows update manager, WUMGr, but the trouble with that one is, it hasn't been updated in a while, like since 2019, and the download option doesn't work with large sized cumulative updates, I get a 403 forbidden error message.
    Is anyone able to help?
    windows 10 Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.4170)
    Thanks.

Hi, sorry to hear of your difficulty.

Is there any reason why you can't simply rely on Windows Update?

There is no need to keep checking for updates. Indeed sometimes updates cause problems!

I've had no problems with WUmgr, but I've only used it very occasionally.

    Yes there is.
I'm just one of those people who like to be in control, I want to choose which updates to get rather than have them automatically foisted on my system. IE, I click check for updates, and it gives me a list of updates, and I can check which one I want to install, like I could with windows 7 and XP.

And thank you for your reply.

You wanted another 3rd party program... from the tutorial section there's this one:
    - but there's so much text on the GUI I think it would be VERY hard for you to use.

Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

Please note that all Windows updates are cumulative. I.e. the next one can include any previous ones you don't have.

You can choose not to have driver and Office updates delivered with Windows Update.

I have Pro, so I choose not to receive any update until I say so using Group Policy. That way I'm not interrupted by downloads or updates.

I also choose to disable Preview updates in Group Policy.

    Hi.
I also recently found another program called windows update blocker, which I also use, but I'll keep the wu10man program around for blocking telemetry data too.
I'm not sure weather to mark this issue as solved, since I'm still looking for a program that acts like windows xp and windows 7 update, where you could click on each update and call up the KB article for more info, or download the update, like WUMGR. Wu10 man is not that kind of program it is just a blocker/unblocker.
I know portable update does what I want, but the problem is that it doesn't work terribly well with text to speech screen readers because it uses old visual basic controls, which require a commercial screen reader like jaws for windows. It won't work with free screen readers like Nonvisual desktop access (NVDA).

The News section here has an article on each and every update.

It looks as if WAU Manager (Windows Automatic Updates Manager) (the one I linked above) allows you to see the support link for the update.

    Did you consider that one?

In that screenshot, on the right, it mentions 'Selected update's support link' (Hyperlink).

Bear in mind that where updates result in users experiencing difficulty, that's normally reported first in tech site items on the internet, and perhaps reflected in comments posted following the above articles on this site - not so often in the MS publications.

I'm not sure screenshots would help this person.

@Hearsepilot Thank you for your helpful and considerate comment.

    1. I did say above- did you notice- that a the program presents so much text that it may be hard to use.
    2. The link to the tutorial I posted includes lots of screenshots of it anyway. So that's already been considered if read.
    Did you notice that?

That clearly shows I am aware of the issues. Ideally the assistive tool used includes screen OCR, as that's a general issue anyway.

Now, do you have any suggestions that might be of help in addressing the original question? E.g. why error 403 might be encountered? Thanks.

It was just a heads up, no criticism, no offence intended, no sarcasm attached.

I've just done a google session on this subject It seems WUMGR isn't the issue it's windows update itself not playing nice.

    Thanks PPL.
Unfortunately, the buttons save and apply, update windows now and uninstall updates are done using pictures rather than text.
Also, there is no clear indicator as to which item is checked, unchecked, or selected with a radio button ETC.
I've contacted carifred the maintainer of WUAU manager and alerted him to the screen reader issue, but that was 3 weeks ago. Hopefully I'll get a response, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
    Thanks.
