    Updating via hotspot

I have used mobile data for years now. Until about 2023, the updates seemed to go through without issue. For at least 3 months though, have been getting this error: 0x80070643

Is there any way at all to enable updates to be installed via a metered connection? Whenever I enable the checkbox, it still doesn't do anything.

It is not practical for me to have a modem based connection where I am, due to circumstances. I also don't need it, or desire it.

It's probably nothing to do with hotspotting.

Which updates? W10 is building a bit of a history of failed updates ....

That will have its disadvantages for reliability for which the user has to compensate where possible.

Any chance to take the device to a location with ethernet, or a wifi location (use USB wifi dongle to connect)?

It's a desktop. I prefer not to have to move it at all, unless it needs to go to a techie. I remember having an update installed some time ago that went through. Already had an unnerving and expensive scenario as a result of moving the tower unexpectedly that I don't want to ever repeat. Exactly why I try to keep movement of it to a bare minimum.

I was complaining about the device being slowed down during the updates, before I was informed that the HDD was faulty (replaced). Had no idea about faulty updates. But from what I've heard, an out of dates OS is asking for trouble. Already had some dodgy program sneak it's way onto the device in the last few weeks.

Is it impossible to do an update using a 'dongle? Mine is more like a mini modem. It has a receptor/tube like component originating from the USB port that plugs in, that can be rotated. In a similar way to an antenna.

Plenty of old Win10 "out of date" (NOT) still running smoothly (altho it's not really OOD until 2025). However it's obvious that MS doesn't give a rats because of the growing number of unrectified failed updates.

The dongle device you describe sounds like a USB wifi dongle that takes its signal from the phone in hotspot mode.

I'm not sure whether you're going to solve any problems with your reluctance to try alternative options. Moving a tower (as cumbersome as it might be) should be a simple process of plugging and plugging cables (power, monitor) and reconnecting to an alternate wifi source in another location using the same USB wifi adapter. Are there geographical limitations (back of Bourke, type?) in not being able to do this?

Replaced HDD? ... with another HDD, or SSD ? How long ago ?

EDIT With your computer having Win 10 installed and activated you could upgrade to Windows 11. You'd need to ..
    - install new drive (preferably SSD), Keeps the old drive intact if need to be put back in
    - download Windows 11 ISO
    - download Rufus
    - create a Rufus boot USB and use the settings to bypass all Win 11 so0called security requirements
    - install Win 11 on blank disk, no internet connection, no license code input
    - when finished, connect intdernet, upadte

    BUT BUT BUT

the Win 11 ISO and then the Win 11 updates will probably suck the guts outta your data allowance

    Yes.
    - You can go to Settings, Updates and run WU manually then tell it to download each update in turn. It will do so even with metered networks set.
    - You can temporarily switch off the metered setting & just let WU run automatically.
I use metered settings. I generally update by downloading updates manually from the MSUpdateCatalog [identified in TenForumsNews articles] but sometimes decide to use WU.

No, it is not impossible. It is perfectly possible.
I had the same problem as you when I tested Bitdefender a few years ago.
It decided it did not like my new USB network adapter and disabled it for use in updating. Without even bothering to tell me.
I found the relevant setting somewhere in Bitdefender preferences that made it accept use of the new USB and I could then use the new USB adapter for updates.
A little while later, I adopted an even more straightforward solution. I ditched Bitdefender in favour of the built-in Windows security with its Defender.
Are you using metered connections because you have a limited data allowance or just as a means of controlling when updates happen? Bitdefender used to download enormous amounts of data - Windows security Defender, like many similar utilities, downloads updated malware definitions once or twice a day whilst Bitdefender used to download whole replacement software modules instead [Defender etc, a few MBs a day: Bitdefender, several GBs a day].

    Likewise.
My smartphone's WiFi hotspot has been my internet connection for over a decade.
Before that, I used a USB dongle containing a SIM card as my internet connection for several years.

Well, Bitdefender is history now, and that yellow spot on the taskbar has appeared for the first time in a few months. I just hope that Win defender is good enough to protect against the vile content that is silently installed on one's device, if they let their guard down in any way.

I don't frequently access dodgy URLs. But there is the occasional exception, where I get desperate for something.

Cheers for the mention. I have scheduled the restart for when it suits me.

    I don't understand that comment.
I haven't got anything yellow on my taskbar.

    Defender is good.
It has been ranked amongst all the other good ones for several years now. AV-TestOrg [If you click on the little > to the right of any entry in the main results table, you can see more details for each one.]

I have to be a little presumptuous here ...

I think the OP meant that yellow spot has DISappeared for the first time in a few months.

The Bitdefender icon that sits in the SysTray has a yellow dot marker if something needs attention (e.g. an outstanding update, an overdue scan)
