    Unable to Delete $WinREAgent Folder

Apparently, when a problem occurs with updating Windows 10, one of the options (although, perhaps, not the first one to try) is to delete the $WinREAgent folder to reset the updating. (I'm sure I did this before, along time ago - which worked.)

However, I've tried to delete the folder this time and am unable to do so. It requires permission from the Admin, but when given, it simply loops throught the permissions request without deleting.

    Any advice?

You can delete anything from 'outside' Windows (when it's not running).

E.g. by booting to a command prompt (not just opening one!)
    or a neat tool is
    Emco Unlockit (free)
    - which if necessary deletes it when the PC restarts (Windows not running).

However, your problem with WU may have nothing to do with that.

Perhaps you could describe what's happening
    - your build number
    - which update
    - exactly what message you see.

And given the particular update involved- do see the article per update in the News section and read about people's experiences in the comments following.

There is not a single reason to delete $WinREAgent folder in WIN 10!
    In WIN 11 it's different.

    Horsepilot: Thanks. I'll try that.

Yes. That thought had occured to me. But this, if I remember correctly, seemed to work last time, so I thought I'd give it another go. No one I've read, seems to indicate that deleting the folder will cause catastrophic system issues - at least, just by deleting it.

Not sure which update specifically is the issue. It just states that an error has been encountered and there were some problems installing updates. (0x80070643)

Thanks for your comment. However. I have a very small SSD with the OS on, which regulary hits the 'red line'. If this folder IS the cause of the update issue, then deleting it and allowing WU to reasert itself would be a reasonable reason - according to many reports I've read (which I accept could all be wrong). For a system with a large (enough) C-drive, probably not.

    Thanks for your comments.

(Not sure how to get multiple quotes from multiple posts. Can someone point me in the direction of a helpful thread?)

    Space:
Free Up Drive Space in Windows 10

Wiztree (free) is excellent- gives a tree structure + a very useful 3d cushion map after a quick scan - and allows access to ANYTHING on your disk.

Consider moving as much personal data OFF C: as possible - in your case to another disk rather than a partition- for O/S maintenance reasons too. I do NOT recommend using the Location tab for this.

I have 256GB SSDs and 100s of progs installed- and still plenty of space. But 128GB would be too small.

If you have large games or very large progs, that may be another matter.

The $WinREAgent folder is probably empty.
    C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local ==> how many tmp-folders?
dir c:\*.etl /w/o/s/p ==> unused log files can be deleted
