This command lists just unused log-files

This tells you if the recovery is enabled or not
C:\WINDOWS\system32>reagentc /info
ESD can be deleted
the 34.000 items can be deleted also. But (!) be patient it can take 30 minutes!

My appologies. The 'Allocated' space is only 32GB. I was looking at the file size.

Delete these etl-files first. Probably several hundred.
C:\ProgramData\USOShared\Logs\System
Then press <Shift> and <Start> <Reboot> and check if it reboots into Recovery. Wait till it really reboots and check if you can run the Command prompt.

or run cmd (admin)
reagentc /boottore
and reboot normally

Your winre.wim has never been updated. So download a new ISO from MS or the last Media Creation Tool that we can replace/exchange the current winre.wim.
What we also need is the programm 7z

Pentagon: You're heading well into unknown territory for me, which makes me very nervous. I did try the reboot, found the menu including 'Troubleshooting' / ' Advanced' / 'Command Prompt', but it came up with an error. Can't rebember exactly what the error was, but it had a couple of options incl. 'try again' and 'other opts.' Got to the list of other startups and selected 'safe mode'. I think it turned itself off then. Can't remember exactly. Bit pannicked. Reboots normally, though.
We have to exchange/replace the winre.wim
Download an new ISO or Media Creation Tool (MCT) from MS
Download 7z
Run reagentc /disable
The winre.wim is now here:
C:\Windows\System32\Recovery
Mount the ISO and run 7z as Administrator and navigate to:
...sources\install.esd\2\Windows\System32\Recovery
Copy the Winre.wim and the ReAgent.xml to C:\Windows\System32\Recovery
When finished run
reagentc /enable
I appologise. I must seem incredibly naive. Is the MCT downloaded from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10 and clicking on the 'Download Now' button? Or is there somewhere else I have to go? (I already have 7z.)
Thank you. All this seemed to work perfectly.
Updating winre.wim seemed to go fine. (I did try to rename the two files with .OLD, but the system wouldn't allow me to do it. So I just went a head and copied them accross without a problem.)
The $WinREAgent folder is now at just a few kBs (not 0B, incidentally) and the Windows Update seems to have gone well.
I'm still a little curious, though, why I wasn't able to delete the folder in the first place, even in the Admin account.

Maybe it needs it needs higher permissions than admin.
Nsudo or dism++ can be useful.

This seems to follow, as I couldn't get any permission to work. However, several threads from several forums suggests deleting it would not do any harm - implying that it was possible, perhaps even with no elevated permission. I also seem to remember doing it before.
