Key Changed from the memory stick key purchase from Microsoft

My key as displayed in the Registry in not that which I used to install from a memory stick with Windows 10 purchase from Microsoft in 2017 Needless to say many updates have occurred since then as I am now running 22H2. I read that I do not need my key loading from a freshly downloaded ISO but that it will ask me whether it is Home or Pro - if wrong I understand I will have to go thru the full install again. My alternative would be to install from the memory stick which of course in much earlier version of Window 10 and I suspect will take hours to update. Best advice please

The computer is activated with a digitial license tied to the unique hardware ID of that computer and stored on Microsoft's activation servers. You no longer need any product key to activate the same edition of Windows 10 or 11 (IE Home or Pro) on that computer.

Assuming you are already activated, you will not be asked for a Product key when you run a Repair install / In-place upgrade from a downloaded ISO file or a InstallUSB made using the MCT.
If you use a InstallUSB made using the MCT for a Clean re-install then the dialog asking for a Product key has a button to use to skip entering one if you are on a computer that has already been activated with Windows 10 or 11.
You will not need to tell it which edition it is for [Home or Pro].

It is not a subject I have paid much attention to but my understanding is that the key you can find in the Registry merely reflects functionality [e.g. acting as Pro rather than Home] and cannot be used for activation.

The Windows Product key is not viewable in Windows Registry without using a 3rd party app. like https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9p...hl=en-us&gl=US if you are interested.
As stated, the OEM product key is embedded in the Bios so you won't have to type it in when reinstalling Windows

    Spunk, NavyLCDR and Tie3.

I do not see any evidence that I sent this - sorry if I did not acknowledge your help promply.

I improperly called it my key but what I was referring to was what is called the Installed Key. Spunk is correct that the registry value that I displayed using: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform under BackupProductKey Detault is described as the BackupProducKey and definitely not my original installation key.
Nirsoft’s ShowPlusKey, which Spunk indirectly suggest would show, did show the key originally sent with the memory stick which I purchased. Try3’ understanding that the key shown in the registry merely affects functionality, acting as Pro rather than Home, which I would love it to do but suspect with the only key after deleting my hard drive for the clean install is burned into the Registry but of course in my case I built this computer myself so no OEM
Now I have read that I will not need a key when I do the install from a downloaded ISO file but there was that mention that if I made the wrong choice between home and pro, I would have t go through a complete reinstall to correct.
I am afraid I got you all helping me with what boils down to a bit of an academic question because in too many places I see Home version (Nirsoft for one) and I should just pick that and be happy. Again I have read that the Pro version makes some contributions to network use and I do rely heavily on mapped drives between my three computers and certainly do not want to lose that feature and probably will not.

    Run as administrator:
    winver

What edition does it say you have currently installed?

I have seen that comment before.
I use Windows Home and I have never had any network problems.

Dennis, glad to hear that you have never had a problem with mapping drives with Windows Home. About definitely show I am using Widows 10 Home Version 22H2. I have lost interest in that Registry entry have confirmed by several methods I own Windows 10 Home.

NavyLCDR, had not seen that method of displaying but had used ShowKeyPlus and BellArc Advisor and obviously About under setting and all show Windows 10 Home Version 22H2. Winver just calls it Microsoft Windows as the first detail but a legal paragraph following states "The Windows 10 Home operating system and its user interface are protected........."

Guys I thank you and have enough confidence to proceed. Downloaded and created a USB Memory Stick to install and only need to check that my UEFI is configured to boot from that stick rather than CD.

    In your dept, Ed Bitzer.

P.S. My two typos in the Subject sure make this thread easy to find for me but will be pretty useless to others looking for the correctly spelled words

That's not quite what I said - I have never had a problem with my networks in Windows 10 Home.
I never bother mapping drives. I just create shortcuts to their locations without assigning them any drive letters.

    Best of luck,

As far as the MCT/Media Creation Tool process I've never had an option to download Home or Pro, what gets installed is determined by the 'key' or License. I have added unused Pro keys for WIn7 and Win8 from the old Microsoft Partners program to upgrade over Home but it didn't take long, appears to just activate parts already installed.
