Windows opens to "can't log in" after auto updates

Windows 10 Pro, 22H2 (19045.3996). I have Windows Update set to off for "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available." However, sometimes when I boot Windows installs an update ("Preparing Windows"). Every time it does that I end up with the screen attached, where Windows reports that it can't sign into my account. Why is Windows updating on its own and why can't it sign into my account? When I immediately restart Windows, it has no problem getting to my desktop as normal. To be clear, Windows Update checks on its own every day and I also run a check once or twice a day, so I know there was no pending update that I had previously downloaded. Thanks,

Right in the middle of the screenshot. The pop up with the dark blue background: "We can't log into your account." The larger pop up on the upper left is Power Toys, and the one down on the lower right is Malwarebytes. I'm asking about the one in the middle.
