    KB5001716 & update issues

Not sure what this is all about, but it's been reporting the update failure for several weeks on our 21H2.3086. I uninstalled KB5001716 and ran Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components to try to clean things up but, well, images might explain best:

I don't mind staying on 21H2, so there's no issue there for me, but what's Ms's hangup here?
    Thanks!

Hi, it's odd that you're still on 21H2- have you done anything to ensure that's so- for example, have you used 'target feature update' (see the searchable Tutorials section for an explanation e.g.).

MS does have a 'safeguard hold' system (see the searchable Tutorials section for an explanation e.g.) to prevent upgrades being delivered to PCs deemed incompatible.....

    As for KB5001716:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...0-b9551cfa6e13

    - complete with downloadable installers- note - both cab and msi installers.

It doesn't state what changes should be apparent.
    News section thread:
KB5001716 Update for Windows 10 Update Service components

Your Update History appears to show it's repeatedly installed, then a further install attempt fails. Also odd, suggesting it installation was incomplete or didn't really succeed.

You can check the WU install logs.

Is this what you mean by
    Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components?
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

What you did is appropriate, but if the tutorial is more complete than what you did, try that.

    MSiinstaller event id 10005
(I can just make it out I think from your screenshot- really tiny even with the image expanded as far as it will)
    - no good finds on that so far. Feel free to research.

You can try manually downloading the update, disconnecting from the internet, uninstalling the update, running the reset WU tutorial, then manually installing the update.

Also run some basic integrity checks as a matter of course:
Check your disk(s): e.g. Hard Disk Sentinel (covers SSDs) - excellent- just launch the program and look.
If ok, from an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    If ok, similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW

Yes, but the kb5001716 errors began weeks before i messed with any of those settings.

How could we verify whether our PC is subject to a 'safeguard hold' designation or block by that system?

And thank you for your reply.

I thought your post previously included a link to a MS forum thread which indicated a solution for this repeated attempt to install this and then failure... or am I mistaken?

    (2) safeguard hold - you can't, directly. Anyway, that's irrelevant as you said you have target feature update in place which explains why you're on 21H2.

I did suggest you could try manually installing it, plus checks and inspecting logs.

Please see this for a specific possible fix:

Note- the error number is the same as yours, so hopefully will help.

Yes, i tried to add another reply, but somehow ended up editing my 1st one by mistake
Your link is the one i found also and would likely fix the issue. The kb5015684 enablement package would likely get me to 22H2, but honestly i'd just as soon stay @ 21H2 and the target feature update doesn't hold indefinitely, so i was curious as to why this kb5001716 error occurs and not just looking for something Ms suggests to throw at it to "fix" the update issue.
Thanks for all your help @ TenForums!

Its a very small but vital update What does kb5001716 do?
This update includes a new user interface (UI) functionality for Windows Update in Windows… When this update is installed, Windows may attempt to download and install feature updates to your device if it is approaching or has reached the end of support for your currently installed Windows version.

Or it may fail to do so

I don't think you'll be lucky with that. We are users, not MS staff. Only someone with the appropriate analytical tools and expertise would be able to tell you what you seek.

Feel free to look at the update logs, but I doubt you'll gain much from those. Other than that, you can of course search in hope of a deeper understanding.

well, we're still on 21H2 (which is good) and Windows Update seems to have magically sorted this outKB5001716 & update issues-fixed.png
I think a manual install of KB5032189 may have fixed things. We are now running build 19044.3693.

    Hello everyone,

Today I did my usual Tuesday updating. After successfully installing all available at that time, I did a second check for updates and this (seemingly old) update (KB5001716) popped up. I then proceeded to download and install, but before it finished I got the ol' "failed to install" error code 0x80070643. I did a typical net search and found downloading KB5015684 may be a fix. However, when attempting to download and install this update I received a message stating that I already have it installed. Does anyone have any ideas on a solution?

I have done a check disk and SFC scan and both checked out okay.

    Code:
Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems.
    No further action is required.
    Code:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
    Thanks in advance.

    Kind regards,

    tecknot
