    Problem installing KB2267602...

I’m having problems downloading and installing Windows updates and running scans on my W10 10.0.19045 Dell Optiplex 5050. This is a recent problem.

I’ve downloaded, saved, unblocked and ran brinks’ file Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components.bat but sadly the problem remains.

T he file took a minute or two to run and mentioned some errors – unable to find certain registry keys being one and also The Application identity is not started – it all scrolled very quickly down the screen so there may have been others but appeared to complete ok and prompted a restart.

When I check for updates the system downloads KB 2267602 but the install fails @ around 66%. This also happened on a number of tries previous to running the bat file. The same update downloaded and installed on my laptop without any problems. Could this update be problematical?

The PC has been trying to install a number of versions of this update and the Reliability Monitor says that one has actually been installed but when I look for it in Installed Updates it is not shown as other wise I would have uninstalled it.

Additionally the Virus and Threat protection tells me it’s stopped and clicking restart does not work.

I am also running Malwarebytes but over some years I‘ve found both programmes happily run together. I normally run Malwarebytes not registered in Windows Security Centre.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Incidentally I initially did a couple of system restores but that didn’t help…

It's probably time to join 2023.

An In-Place Upgrade "compares" what is installed on the computer, with the Windows ISO image.
Then, it overwrites any corrupted Windows files, with clean copies from the ISO image.
This is how it "repairs" Windows while allowing you to keep your programs and personal files.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper Standard
Making a backup is optional, but always a smart move.
If you had a backup from before this problem occurred, you wouldn't be reading this.
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect for Home Use
Free Backup Software for Windows | AOMEI Backupper Standard (free)

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.
The ISO must be created in the same language as you are using in Windows, to be able to keep your Programs and Files.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations.
Your drivers, programs and data will be intact.

Hi, this appears to be a generic update for Windows Defender. Instances mentioned on tenforums date back to at least 2014.

There are also plenty of reports of problems installing it over the years. 609 results.

Feel free to examine, in particular, solved threads.

However, as Ghot suggests the most expeditious way generally to resolve update errors is to do an in-place upgrade repair install.

Before you do that, also check your disk (s) - 3rd party program e.g. Crystal Diskinfo, Hard Disk Sentinel, and then also run
    chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command prompt and check it passes.

Thanks Ghot and Dalchina for your advice.

Mention of the ‘in-place upgrade’ brings me out in goosebumps. I did one a couple of years ago and had to psyche myself up before hitting the button – and of course all went well.

This time it was less stressful and after about 30 minutes the computer re-booted – and all was good !!! Whew… I did read here a couple of days ago another poster who appeared to be pretty computer-literate asking for assurances before doing an in-place upgrade so obviously I’m not the only one…

Updates now work as intended as does the Windows Security scanner. The upgrade bunched all my desktop icons to the left of the screen whereas before I had them sorted into groups – rearranging them took two minutes and it also cleared the Reliability Monitor logs – so no real downside at all.

Oh and Ghot - >>> If you had a backup from before this problem occurred, you wouldn't be reading this. <<<

I do make a bootable clone ‘every’ week using Casper but somehow I messed up my routine – missed a week and paid the price!

Take one hundred lines - "I must be more careful next time"...

Thanks guys, TenForums again to the rescue…

Great. I would really recommend disk imaging as a more convenient approach (faster, multiple restoration dates from files on a single disk) as a method of securing your system.

Manual (removing disk storage used), scheduled (disk still attached) imaging- both are supported by programs such as Macrium Reflect, Aomei Backupper etc.

Complement that with scheduled creation of a restore point (tutorial available) and any additional specific data backup of key fast-changing data....
