    Update screw-up again

Why is it nearly every time an update has been due this year, after trying to download and install them there is always an error?

Once again I had to redo the latest set of updates, as first time round errors were shown. Once finally installed without an error message, I ran sfc /scannow, only to find that errors/violation of the system had taken place. I think this issue has now happened 3-4 times in succession now.

    Why does this keep occurring?

    - what sort of error? Specific error number?

I ran sfc /scannow, only to find that errors/violation of the system had taken place.
You can compare results with people who report running SFC /SCANNOW for a particular update by reading the comments following the article on that update in tenforums' News section if you wish.

FWIW I don't have any issues receiving and installing updates on my two installations which date back to 1709 and 1511 respectively- i.e. years old without reinstalling.

One possible cause of SFC /SCANNOW failing is any system file modification that has been made.

Once again I had to redo the latest set of updates
    - how are you starting the update process?

Suggest you try two routine checks:
    a. Check your disk
    - 3rd party program e.g. Crystal diskinfo, better: Hard Disk Sentinel (full function trial/giveaway/license - covers SSDs too)
    - if ok, run
    chkdsk c: /SCAN
from an admin command prompt. Result right there on GUI.

Thnx for response. I have error id no.20, - 0x8024001E and 0x800F080A, both of which refer to the cumulative .NET Framework update. It failed twice to install yesterday, but succeeded on my 3rd attempt.

Nothing wrong with the disk showing on Crystaldiskinfo - 100%. It's a fairly new disk anyway.
    Result of chkdsk c: /SCAN:
Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems. No further action is required

The update is started as it always has been. Go to the Settings-->Update/Security page and and click Download. It's the Cumulative updates that seem to cause an issue. MRT update always goes through just fine, although sometimes the Security Intelligence Agent for Defender updates also fail on first attempt.

That update also gave me problems i had to update it twice, it crashed my explorere on login and then reverted a restore point after the first time. Just keep trying worked the second time after that.

Yes it was the recent net frame work update

If the problem lies with getting it reliably via Windows Update you can try manually downloading it.
As it's now installed, doesn't seem to be a problem with your Windows installation.

Assuming you mean this one - article from the News section which I referred to:
    KB5028937 Cumulative Update .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8, and 4.8.1 (22H2)

then see the links under Source below the main text.. one of which takes you to:
    https://catalog.update.microsoft.com...aspx?q=5028937

Naturally you can't anticipate a problem like that, only deal with it once it's occurred.

So now you have another way forward if future problems occur.

However you should be prepared for things going wrong- Malneb refers to System Restore, and that nicely complements the routine and regular use of 3rd party disk imaging.

Yes, that's another issue (BiB). I always make a restore point before an update. But each time I make one it often gets deleted after the update has taken place. That's been an ongoing nuisance for years with Win 10, and never fixed.

Should only happen after an upgrade rather than an update.

And if that's your experience, all the more reason to update your disk image set before updating/upgrading...
