I see that KB5011048 was released today , and NET Framework 4.8.1 was installed automatically via Windows Update .
Do we have to have it as I can see no way to uninstal it easily
Up till now I have managed with NET Framework 4.8 and below and have not installed any programmes recently which might have wanted 4.8.1

This should be a minor update to 4.8, likely including security updates. Since it's only an update, is there some reason you specifically want to uninstall it?
I'm just trying to understand the logic, so forgive me if I'm not understanding.
EDIT: I'm looking at previous updates and I see .NET 4.8.1 for at least a few months. So, it does not appear to be new. Maybe the patch or update is new, but not .NET 4.8.1.

The titles of updates to Net framework often include both 4.8 & 4.8.1 but Windows examines the computer and skips the 4.8.1 part if that is not installed.
How did you establish that?
The only method I know is Find Dot NET Version using PowerShell - Prajwal.org

However you seem to overlook that KB5011048 is specifically mentioned as a "feature pack" for Net Framework 4.8.1 released yesterday.

Before yesterday I only had up to version 4.8
So my request is did people who only had 4.8 get offerred 4.8.1 as I did yesterday ?
On the Windows catalogue page for Kb 5011048 it states:
Description: The Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8.1 is a highly compatible, in-place update for all the previous versions of .NET Framework 4.X. After you install this update, you may have to restart your computer.
I currently have 4.8 and not 4.8.1.
I'm now being offered KB5011048 - Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64 (KB5011048) {dated yesterday} which I'll probably delay for a couple of weeks out of pure laziness.

Until yesterday I only had 4.8 and only received updates for that version. Yesterday the scenario changed, in addition to receiving the same KB that you also received, I also received:
June 13, 2023 Cumulative Update-KB5027538 for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8, and 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 22H2 and
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8.1 Language Pack on Windows 10 Version 21H2, Windows 10 Version 22H2, Windows 11 Version 21H2, Windows Server 2022 (Desktop, Azure Editions), Azure Stack 21H2 and Azure Stack 22H2 (KB5027937).
