    Permanent disabling of updates ?

    Hey !

Is there a way of permanently disabling Windows Updates ?

I've switched it off in Registry, Powershell and Services and yet it seems to switch itself back on and severely slows down the PC.

    So annoying !

I disable automatic updates by setting all my network connections to 'metered'.
    - There are no side-effects.
    - No other actions are required so you can undo all your RegEdit, PS, ... changes.
    - One minor update a year sneaks through in the blink of an eye.
Explained in detail in My ditty - set metered on all, update WD, update procedure - post #4 - TenForums

    Best of luck,
    Denis

You might still find that Edge updates itself. It has its own scheme that is separate from Windows update.
You can set Edge to update manually instead. I don't know what its default is.
You can check your setting in
Edge, the ... thing on the right-hand end, Help, About and just turn off the Download updates over metered connections switch.

If you have MSOffice then that also has its own update scheme that is separate from Windows update.

    Welcome to TenForums.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.
    - At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
    - I download a new copy each month.
    - By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
    - Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
    - Both tutorial lists are searchable.
    - You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,
    taskbar toolbars site:tenforums.com/tutorials

You can search TenForums using the search box in the top-right corner of all TenForums webpages or using Advanced Search - TenForums
    - You can also search TenForums threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com after your search term. For example,
Search for drivers by HardwareID site:tenforums.com
    - [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of TenForums webpages does automatically]

Not that I use Edge but just looked and auto updates seem to be switched off already and now it's metered, you have to allow it by clicking the toggle switch so fingers crossed .............

    Woodnome,

There are also plenty of suggestions in
Enable or Disable Check for Windows Updates - TenForumsTutorials
Enable or Disable Automatic Updates for Windows Update - TenForumsTutorials
Enable or Disable Including Driver Updates in Windows Update - TenForumsTutorials

I settled on using metered connections instead [about eight years ago] because it is simple, easy & reliable.
    - I was rather put off the other methods because of the number of people reporting that they stopped working or, in some cases, by their complexity.
    - The metered method allows me to run Windows update manually if I choose to.
    - I can easily turn it off [reverse my Registry changes] if I want to without there being any side-effects.

    All the best,
    Denis

You have to control the telemetry... the IP addresses pouring in and out of Windows...

All W10 updates are security updates now. Turning them off is dumb.
Solve the problem - not the symptoms.
