chkdsk resulted in 0 bad sectors (no wonder, it's a new disk)
sfc resulted in a message of some corrupted files but cbs.log says that corrupted files were repaired
how else can I check or verify the integrity of windows?
what is the advantage of upgrading thru MS update assistant?
    many thanks

Sometimes people have found it works when another method doesn't.

Same applies to upgrading using an iso file compared with Windows Update.

And again, choosing not to accept updates during the procedure, if you get that far, can help.

But I think you are stuck with having to resolve the underlying issue preventing the upgrade. Ideally not, of course.

how else can I check or verify the integrity of windows?
By performing an in-place upgrade repair install.

However, I wouldn't jump into doing that. Rather, find out what that error message implies from threads where people have tried to resolve it.

I've found the thread where HeM & zbook helped a user with the same setupdiag.exe message.
Unfortunately there nothing there that will help you.. the underlying case- upgrading from Win 8 was different.

The message suggests technical analysis (which I've not done):
but the debugger binaries were not found. Either examine the memory dump here: C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupmem.dmp or install the debugger tools from here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...vers/debugger/ to determine the failure.
