No updates in Window 10 Pro - ends with error code 0x80040154

    Hi,
I am new in this forum. Please excuse my English knowledge and also I'm not that familiar with the System.
    I use Windows 10 Pro / Version 22H2 / System build 19045.2193

Since December the update process does not start and gives an error code 0x80040154.
    Troubleshooting: IsPostback_RC_PendingUpdates / IsPostback: False
service status: Problem with BITS service: The requested service is already started.
Attempts to find more error messages or solutions showed sfv /scannow could not be started/ DISM commands ended with class not registered.
Unfortunately, Microsoft Support was not helpful, also the QuickAssist could not be loaded.
An attempt was also made to do an upgrade installation, but that also broke off with an error.

The PC starts normally, all programs run, otherwise no problems except the updates do not start (not even the download)
Now I can't install updates and security updates.

Is there a workaround to save the system with all programs, an idea what the problem is behind it or any other help?
    Thanks for help.

    Welcome to tenforums.

An attempt was also made to do an upgrade installation, but that also broke off with an error.
Please advise whether this was an attempt to run an in-place upgrade repair install using an iso file of the same major build.

If that fails, diagnosis is hard.

Have you already done the usual basic checks on your disk and file system?
E.g. Hard Disk Sentinel - great prog, instant report on your disk.

    If ok, run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt

Given your symptoms, ensure you do both.

Should your O/S not be repairable you could potentially transfer your working environment to a clean install using a program such as Laplink PCmover or Easeus ToDo PCTrans.

Feel free to search tenforums for your error number - there are similar reports. But first check disk & file system.

And as asked- was what you did an in-place upgrade repair install using an iso file of the same major build?

If so you can try running setupdiag.exe (free from MS) and see if the log file tells you anything.

Thanks, I'll try that. I downloaded the latest version of Windows. That was what Microsoft support recommended and I tried it also again separately.

Yesterday I tried with a friend (via Teamviewer) to make the PC Windows 11 compatible. Again, the Windows 11 installation seemed to work, but then aborted with error on the first reboot. Obviously, essential components that prevent installation are destroyed and there is no way to check that. Sfc scan failed and also DISM check.
I would have liked to receive the data and programs, because some I can only activate once.

If an in-place upgrade repair - where you use an iso file of the same major build as you have- where you
    a. log in as normal
    b. rt click iso file
    c. click mount
    d. open new drive letter created
    e. double slick setup.exe

(I'm still not clear as to whether that's what you've tried)

fails, you are in difficulty as I said above.

It is apparent that something is somewhat broken as regards Windows Update or which affects it.

Assuming your RAM is ok (you could check) then naturally a clean install as an option.

Yesterday I wanted to post some of the results of setupdiag.exe test.
But because I had uninstalled the virus scanner during the actions to rescue the system, I have now received a backdoor virus message from Microsoft defender.
I first have to think about what I will do next. I would contact you again.
