    Problem installing update KB5021233

My computer has been chocking on Windows 10 update KB5021233 all week. I keep getting Error Code: (ox80073712) I've tried running the Windows Update Troubleshooter with no luck. Any other ideas or should I just forget to do that update?

Many such reports of Windows Update failing with particular error codes have been reported on tenforums.
It is often worth searching for the error code.

Whilst it is sometimes possible to find the exact cause, this can be hard, and more time spent than undertaking a routine repair.

    See e.g.
    http://hs.windows.microsoft.com/hhwe...-099ae7939d23/

and you can, or course, consider an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data
This has been described in 4 steps scores of times on tenforums.

As you've overlooked the forum prompt

I'll just assume you're running the latest major build.

Thanks, the in-place upgrade repair install should be easy for you as that's the current build.

Not true. All the built in troubleshooter says is that it can not find the problem. Nothing seems to work and the update STILL will not complete. I just keep getting the error message! I did a quick search on Google and one thing to try was to run DISM and that didn't work. It just says that it can not find the SOURCE (what ever that is). I'm totally lost now. HELP!!

How to do it =- yet again, simple instructions.
    Google MS media creation tool.
Use that to download an iso file.
Rt click iso file, click Mount
    Open new drive letter created
    Double click setup.exe.

Most people who do an in-place upgrade repair install say it was much easier than expected. I guess you're not 'most people'.

And one thing you don't know about why I said that. If you'd had an older build, getting the right iso file would have required a different method- a little harder.

You haven't said whether you've actually done the in-place repair install or not, so no further comment.

I have a similar issue with Win Updates at the moment. That's another story. Sometimes a reinstall and/or in-place repair won't fix a problem if the error is with the update from MS. Look at the update on the MS website to see if there are any known issues with KB5021233. This time of year, expect a bit of a wait for fixes as everyone is off celebrating Christmas.

Well I finally got the time and this way worked. It just took about 3 hours but data and apps were left along (they worked after I finished). Thanks for your help.

Good.. and are you now successfully up to date?

If so, make sure you now create a disk image using a 3rd party tool such as Macrium Reflect.. to large enough external storage.

Start a new routine of regularly using disk imaging so you have both a means of recovery should bad things happen- even if your disk fails, imaging at least all the partitions comprising your O/S (which can be in one image file), and a full backup.
